My finished 60 in 1 cocktail cabinet
« on: August 15, 2014, 09:32:26 pm »
Hey all,

Just wanted to share my finished project.  A  60 in 1 cocktail cab.  Also thanks to all here that have helped me along the way with questions and a few ideas, not to mention when I nearly got ripped off from an artist when JDFan, Malenko and some others opened my eyes.  A big thanks to JDFan for all the artwork on my cab.

Tell me what you think!

Thanks guys,

I will get some pics on here later this afternoon I promise.  Although I didn't start taking any pics until after the cab was together.  I'll post what I have.

JD Yes great job on the artwork.  Remember I told you I had an alluminium checkerplate  to go on the front bottom of both sides?  Well I bloody forgot about it and stuck the artwork starting from the bottom, so I either have to get the front art re printed and mount the aluminium checkerplate on the bottom as originally was going to do, or leave as is.  I was kicking myself when I remembered!

Could change it up and put a clear plexi kickplate instead of the aluminum or just leave as is if you don't tend to kick the cabinet too much  :dunno

I also liked the look of the aluminum. I'll probably leave as is

Can always just keep the artwork file and if/when it gets too worn out from kicking get a new one printed and add the aluminum then. I see you made the return trip to the printer to get the top printed.

This is pretty much when I had most of the woodwork finished, which is when I decided to take a pic.  I found that the easy part.

This is where I started working on the control panel.  Sides and bottom are made from 16mm MDF and the front and top from 2mm aluminium.  I got them cut and bent to shape where I used to work as I know the guys well.  The 2 control panels to cut and bend plus material cost me $10. Not bad

The pic shows where I was aligning the artwork to workout where to start drilling the holes.  I only have an A4 printer so I had to lign it up as best I could.

Player 1 control panel covered with my bubble free matte black vinyl and the yellow T-Moulding.  Makes a difference.  This is where everything started to look nice and the excitement was kicking in.

Player 1 control panel finished.  I have since changed the square buttons at the top to round ones.  Service and Test buttons is what they are.

Before I covered the cab with the vinyl, I sprayed around the edges where the T-Mold will go.  My thinking behind it was that if the T-mold would not sit flush against the wood, you would see black rather than the bare wood, which will mix in with the vinyl.

The monitor was also mounted at this point with 2 brackets underneath.

This is how I mounted the monitor.  You guessed it, back to my mates to make me the brackets, though easy to bend but was feeling lazy.  My 8 yr old son (our project) holding the top open so I can take pic.  You can see I have used a piano hinge to open the top from one side to get to the inside.  Works well for me.

I obviously got a bit lazy with photos in between here again.  I had just finished all the wiring and had put a little coffee table inside the cab to hold the monitor because my table top was at the glass place.  A few small hickups with settings and all is good, kids happy!

The artwork was originally printed on transparent material but when stuck on the black vinyl, the artwork virtually dissappeared, so they had to print it on white vinyl to bring the dark colours out.  The printed black is a little lighter than my black vinyl (which I was always worried about) but it still looks OK as is.

...and this is the final product.

What have I forgotten?  The monitor is a Dell 19" 4:3 ratio which I got locally from a private sale for $20, works awesome.  No dead pixels or anything.
The glass is tinted ( made like that, not tint put on it), and it's 5mm thick.
Only thing I don't like is the glass clips which seem to be standard for cocktail cabs.  I'm looking for another solution.

I have mounted the amplifier just on the inside of the cab so when you open the top, you can easily adjust volume etc, but again, looking for a better solution.  I couldn't exactly mount 3 control knobs (trebble, bass, vol) on a 16mm MDF.  Maybe cut out a small square and mount an aluminium (I know I like aluminium, it's cheap, light etc) plate on the inside and mount the knobs there, so that way I will have controls on the outside.

I did not use a fan inside my cab purely because I thought I'd be a smartass.  I don't think it'll need it.  I have a hole cut out on the bottom covered with wire mesh, sorta like speaker grille mesh.  Let me know if you guys think I will need a fan.

That's about all I got people.  If you have any questions let me know.

Oh and... if anyone is interested in the artwork, I will be more than happy to share with you whatever I have.  Just private message me.

Pheww.  Sorry I didn't take anymore pics

Thanks wp34

I got inspired by this.  Also I wanted to try and build the whole thing out of 1 piece of 1200 x 2400 or 8' x 4' for you.  Not so much for the cost but because I didn't think something like a cocktail cab should take any more than that to build.  So I managed to build the whole lot with 1 sheet which I was happy about.
