600 for Pac Man???
« on: July 11, 2014, 09:48:41 am »
Some guy in my area is selling a PacMan machine for 600. From the pictures it looks to be in good condition in this guys house, But who knows. Is that even a reasonable starting price for a PacMan machine??

Are there any clues I should look for to see if its original or not?

Decent price if it's in presentable condition.  Buy it now.

I talked with him. He said all hes done is replace t-molding since it was faded and used the original orange color. Is this correct?

And should their be any stickers on the back to show its original from the 80s?

Well...for 600 that can only play one game. seems like a lot of money. But IM not very well versed in worth of games, which is why I came here.

Not sure if being original matters or not.

600 is the high end for me, if its in really great shape with no monitor, board, sound, or control issues it could be worth it.  Question is, do you love MsPacman $600 worth?

Its for PacMan...not Ms Pac Man.

And are there jamma kits that will allow me to convert this into a multi game pcb?

When checking out the cabinet, I can see the quality of wood and art, but when the game is on anything I should check on?

typo, my bad.

Pacman is not jamma. they do sell a 96 in 1 pacman kit. I believe you can get a pac to 60 in one adapter that uses the start buttons as fire buttons as well.  major hurdle is pacman doesnt have any action buttons just a 4way, and that really limits the number of games.

Ugh, if you're going to spend $600 on a Pac-Man, don't throw a 60-1 in it. Leave it original. If you want a multigame, just do a scratch build.

welp, Im not advocating he put a 60 in 1 in it, but if he does I think its better if he doesnt destroy the original wiring so hopefully it can be reverted.  I'll be kinda bummed if he drills holes in the control panel.

I have a 60 in 1 in my galaga, and it uses the start buttons for the other fire buttons, but the Galaga I got was freakin destroyed.

Pac Man cabinets are fairly rare birds.  $600 is cheaper than it would cost to make one, c'mon.  Haggle him down to $450 just on principle, though.

Get a JAMMA adapter and toss a 60 in 1 in there.

I do plan on making my own build anyways, which is why Im hemming and hawing spending 600 on a pacman cab that plays one game...when I can spend that money and make my own that plays everything under the sun essentially.

Well, it all depends on your motivation... I'd rather have one cabinet that plays 1 game the correct way than a MAME cabinet that can play 3000 games in a half-assed manner... mind you, I have 2 MAME cabs that play everything I want them to, and 8 dedicated cabs that play only game the right way.

Not meant as a criticism of you, just an counter-argument that a cab that plays 1 game isn't a bad thing...

I never understood the appeal of pac-man.

Same maze, same ghosts.

However, I still would not want to destroy or alter the cab in any way.
If it were me, I would find another control panel, add additional buttons, then MAME or MULTI it.

Keep the old CP inside the cabinet in case you sell it. It'll be worth waaaay more than $600 some day.

I don't want to get off track, or turn this into a soapbox discussion.

I much prefer Ms. Pac, since at least the mazes change. Really, I do like ALL arcade games, but plain Pac Man is my least favorite. Throw a Galaga at me, and I'm smiling ear to ear! Galaga 88 is probably my favorite. There's something satisfying about blowing up the little aliens and getting the fireworks show when they explode.
