Any Subbuteo players?
« on: July 08, 2014, 05:57:49 pm »
All this recent talk of board games and the fact that the world cup is underway got me thinking about Subbuteo.  I encountered it through my soccer coach in high school and only ever got to play a few games but really enjoyed it.  I'm thinking about setting up a pitch and getting started - I think my 6 year old might really enjoy it either now or in the future and I'd like to play again.

Just wondering if there are any other Subbuteo players and any advice on which set to order starting out - seems like there is a huge variety in price and quality out there.

Pic for those who have no idea what this is (mostly Americans)

It's a little known fact that anytime Genesis or Phil Collins songs are quoted on byoac, we are required by law to post the video.

Disagree?

I played Subbuteo a fair bit. I even got a new set a few years back when they talked one Christmas of not making it anymore (perhaps they don't?) and I panicked I'd never get to play again.

I tried to recreate the World Cup in 1982 in subbuteo against my brother but he got stroppy when I thrashed his Brazil team with New Zealand 4-0. Today, suddenly, that doesn't seem so far fetched.

I had several different generations of "Arsenal" and a few odd teams from freebie vouchers in "Match" magazine too - things like Lille (French) 2nd kit. It probably didn't sell well, even in France and they just gave it away. It was mad the number of kits/add ons they had - floodlights, stands, linesman, streakers, the lot!

Couple of random Phil Collins facts:

One, he's got so much nerve damage in his shoulders he has to wipe his ass with a curved stainless steel rod with a wad of toilet paper on it.  While I'm glad that means no more Phil Collins music that's a fate I wouldn't wish on many.

Two, he's obsessed with the Alamo and owns a building across the street that sells old unrelated junk.  The place is run by an old crank that stomps down the stairs and wants his $5 before he'll hit a button that starts a sound and light show on Phil's $100,000+ diorama.  I'd say it's actually worth the $5, I've probably seen it four times by now.

The pic in your question is what you need to get started. That's the basic set - pitch, 2 goals, team (inc 2 keepers on sticks and 10 other players), a ball or 2 (for when you step on the first one!). They often come with a ref, or corner flags etc but you don't need them.

You'll probably then need blu-tac / super glue to stick players back to bases also for "stepped on" injuries more frequent than hamstring strains in the real football (soccer if you must).

It works best to stick the pitch down to a table/board so that it's flat without ruffles too.

The basic sets will be fairly cheap on ebay I'm sure (especially the new/re-released ones from a few years back which to play it would be the best bet anyway most like mine have probably never been used).

@Essex - thanks for the info.  I was looking at starter sets shipped from England and can get a pro set here in the states for about the same price after shipping.  I really like those astropitches, I think I'll get one of those and go ahead and glue it down.  Porbably do the flip side in felt as well with a bumper boarder so it can be used as a card/board game table. I was going to order a 2014 Brazil set but after last night I might wait a bit and see if they go on sale lol

@BM - there's enough fighters out there I'm sure one of the characters already does.  What's that old saying about monkeys and typewriters?

@PBJ - had no idea PC was an Alamo nut, we'll have to check out that display.

As you're looking at the church doors on the Alamo, Phil's building is the small white one that's back and to the left across the street.  Think it's called The History Shop or something along those lines.  He also recently donated a ton of artifacts back and I wouldn't be surprised to hear he had some part in getting the State of Texas back in control of the Alamo.

Why anyone without familial ties to Texas or Mexican history would visit that site has always eluded me but San Antonio likes your tourist money!   ;D

I'm only interested in seeing the basement of the Alamo.

I concur with that sentiment.  I'm named after a direct descendant that fought at the Battle of San Jacinto.  Been out to the monument to do a rubbing of his name and everything.  My family is so steeped in lone star malarky that even still - tho my parents have lived in MO for 35 years - they have multiple rooms of their McMansion decked out in horns, maps, lariats, bronzes, and general Texas brickabrack.  I'm the first member of my family on either side in the last 90 years to graduate from a college other than Baylor, UT Austin, or A&M.  I'm also the first of my generation for the last 150 to be born outside of the lone star hole.

It's kindof a blessing and curse really.

Baylor?  Lah dee damn dah.   ;D

Yeah, I'm certified "First Family of Texas" and "Son of a Signer" and all that assorted nonsense.  It has brought me fame, fortune, and above average looks.

I like it here and that's enough for me.  Two and a half years in Missouri was enough for me.

Ok but I thought it was Genesis or Peter Gabriel.

Watching that was seriously more interesting than watching a live action game.

I believe the astropitch has a backing (rubber?) that means it rolls out and doesn't ruck up. Therefore, you may find that doesn't need gluing/pegging out. i.e. it could be the ideal solution.

I guess the WC got all the other wannabe subbuteoers digging for their wallets, the US supplier is totally sold out of sets.  Good deal, means that in a few months ebay should start flooding with unopened or barely played pro subbuteo sets of the US vs Brazil team and astropitch mats to be had at a bargain.  :woot

Reading the thread in Brit-speak mode caused a momentary disconnect.   :dizzy:
