26" arcade monitor - replace with 26" CRT TV?
« on: June 16, 2014, 08:56:16 pm »
I'm taking a 26" arcade monitor out of my current cabinet and was not quite sure on what the closest match would be for a CRT television (which will be out of its case).  I know it might not be a simple apples-for-apples swap, but what would the closest match truly be a 26" TV or should I shoot a little higher/lower?

are you talking about swaping the tube with the same chassis?
or replacing the entire thing with a standard crt television?

you could probably look at the tube model sticker on the tube and try to match up the first few letters/numbers
those usually signify the size of the tube

like A48 is a 19 inch tube. A63 is a 25
presumably A66 would be 26
thats assuming its a metric tube.
the letters and numbers match its a safe bet the mounting tabs will line up. but you'll have to dig around and look in the vents to spot it or take the back off

Thanks for the reply!  I'll be taking the arcade monitor out entirely, and replacing with a different CRT television.  So, essentially I'm wondering if they generally align in measurements (meaning that a 26" would give me a greater chance at fitting than a 27" and so on).

probably, but like I said, if those numbers match you'll likely get an exact fit.

I'm not sure about a 26" TV tube matching a 26" arcade tube in size.  You'd think it would, but I think it might be difficult to find a 26" tube anyhow.  24" and 27" are standard sizes.  I'd see if you can squeeze in a 27".

The one time I did a monitor swap like you are describing was easy.  I don't recall the size, but I took the bezel off the cabinet with me to Goodwill and just held it against TV's till I found one that seemed right.  Got the TV home and de-cased it.  The thing dropped right onto the existing mounting bracket like a glove.  Exact fit.

So, I'm thinking TV tubes and arcade monitor tubes probably come off the same assembly line.

I know a 19" in fit right in on my midway cab that had a 19" arcade monitor. Sansui made some 26" (may sometimes be listed as 27") CRTs I really like and am always on the lookout for. I bet if a 27" didn't fit perfect for you, it would with minor modifications to the mounting brackets.
Completed projects: Pac bartop (Plug & Play), 30th Anniversary Pac cab (MAME), Point Blank (PS1), Centipede (arcade hardware- light restore), VS. Super Mario Bros (arcade hardware- light restore) Tetris Cocktail (SNES), Arcade Classics upright (60-in-1, then MAME), Multi-Raiden (arcade hardware). Pac Man vs.(Gamecube),

Working on: Pinball Re-theme, Homebrew arcade arena shooter

are you doing this because the tube is necked or is it because you have a faulty chassis?
if it is the latter then it would be logical to repair the chassis

As regards CRT sizes, lots of misunderstandings are due to the different sizing methods used by Americans vs the rest of the world. For instance, what is called 25" in the US is called 26" in the rest of the world. To understand why see this (the size chart in particular):

http://wiki.arcadeotaku.com/w/CRT_designation_systems

Anyway, the monitor in your pic is in fact a 26" = US 25" (proper notation would be 25V, that is 25" viewable) and 25" TVs are very common in the US (the tubes will have a type number starting with A63).
