More sketchup wankery this morning. Everyone at work digs this. The control panel artwork is going to be the last thing I worry about, Imma need some help on that for sure. I'm not sure about the ? blocks on the corners but the block foundation, pipe up front, and the flag pole/tv mount are keepers, I think. I was going to make a filing cab so what I think =  :dizzy:

Thoughts?

The back blocks will be smaller, of course, I just imported a quick texture to see how it'd look.

See?  Simple.  Now we're getting somewhere. :applaud:

How about a "?" brick insert in a large square button, similar to the GGG CDR.

Also, you may want to add a second pipe on the front and/or move the current pipe location if it blocks the wheel mount.

there are 2 wheel mounts. I was thinking that I could have them mount where the ? blocks are on the control panel corners. Too far out?
Looks like that could be too far out -- you might want to bring them in a few inches, assuming there is still enough elbow room for 2 players.   ;D

Throwing it out there but to make room for 2 wheels you might have to put one ? brick in the middle of the CP with the coin button as the bottom of the question mark then angle the two front sides of the CP To act as backing mounts to each of the wheels.

Are you going to put one of those pinball lights on the top?  That is what it looks like in the sketch up.

Yeah, you're right, that would be a bit snug. If I mount the wheels where the coin blocks are in that image or out a little more but extend the overall width of the control panel to 30" or 32" and toss those square push buttons out toward the ends, it'll be roomy. The control panel width in the sketchup image is only 24"

Throwing it out there but to make room for 2 wheels you might have to put one ? brick in the middle of the CP with the coin button as the bottom of the question mark then angle the two front sides of the CP To act as backing mounts to each of the wheels.
I don't quite follow what you're saying. I'm sorry, man. I do like the idea about using a button for the dot in the question mark but it'd have to be a small button or a large question mark. I'm digging the square buttons PL1 linked. With the ? block image as an insert it'll be good.

Apparently I'm slower than usual today because I don't know what a pinball light is. Google isn't helping. On top of the flag pole? I was just going to try and make it look like the game, some kind of sphere. I don't know how to make spheres in sketchup. I guess some kind of light would work there, if that's what you're talking about. Sorry.
Its not you, its me.  I'm a V8 firing on 2 cylinders today.  I'll find a picture of what I mean.

You can get a twist-on dome and receptacle and socket (or something similar) that uses wedge base bulbs/LEDs.

Also, the square button previously linked can use the same wedge-base LEDs that normal LED buttons use in place of the #161 bulb that comes with it if you want the longer-life option.   ;D

Have you thought about using a red brick veneer rather than wood for the build -- or routing out the mortar lines and painting in the mortar to give it a 3-d look?

That's exactly what I was planning on doing. I don't know how to do that with a router but I was going to rig something up to allow me to scrape the pattern out of the mdf. Get out of my head, man.  :lol

Got any examples of how to go about that with a router? I was going to use a piece of metal as a guide and drag something sharp across the board a few billion times, mdf is pretty easy to mangle. A router sound faster/easier.
Seems lilke it would be easier to use brick hardboard/wallboard from Lowes or Menards.   :dunno

Figure with a router it would just be a matter of cutting the rows across with a straight edge or v shape bit and then going back to do the column cuts every few inches offset on each row to make the brick pattern. ( and since it is brick you don't even have to be perfectly straight on the cuts as they have dings in the bricks normally)

That said I think Scott has the easiest idea @ $26 for a 4x8 sheet of 1\4" material it's probably faster and much less time consuming to do it that way - And figure if you build a sturdy inner frame the 1\4" material is probably sturdy enough to use instead of MDF for those sides (saving time and Money !!) and they will even have the brick texture without painting

Don't worry about it LT.  Just me throwing out ideas.  I see now how you are going to mount the wheels.  And Scott beat me to recommending the hardboard from Menards.  I'm wondering also if you want to find an alternative to the steel pipe.  It may be strong enough to support the tv but may be too heavy for the cab itself.

This requires quite a bit of imagination. First let's pretend that I've got 3 friends and we're all hanging out playing arcade games.

Yeah, that's a bit of a reach.

Just playin' Tully, I like your mock up. A little complicated but not outragious.

Search Amazon for take apart hinges or lift off hinges -- lots of options to choose from.   ;D

Combine some of those hinges with rubber bumpers (or maybe just t-molding?) on the bottom edge and a quick release pin or a spring-loaded threaded knob like on your steering wheel mount.

A DB-25 will be easier to work with than that HD-15 (VGA) connector -- consider using some old printer cables to save effort on the wiring.

I think this will work out nicely.
Not too shabby for a little scrap 3/4" aluminum strip and a bit of elbow grease. I'll make the grooves a little deeper on the final pieces but this is good enough for a test.

That turned out quite nice.  You've given me an idea how to solve a problem on a project I've been working on as well.  Thanks.

The trick will be in the paint.  Getting a good texture and a nice mix of colors will do wonders towards the brick effect.  I think there are some decking solutions out there that are very thick and could give you good results.

I would even look on Halloween forums for what to do for paint texture and material.  Its amazing how some people have created cemetary gates, moseliums, gravestones, etc with just paint and pink foam.

Just think of that Custom Splatter-house cabinet.

Seems like a good idea to find someone with a CNC to cut the brick/stone pattern pieces.

If you stick to a multiple of 3/4" for the pattern, it will be easier to manually cut/file/blend the patterns into the edges of the front piece.

For the pipes, use a belt sander/sanding block to remove the lettering on a PVC drain cap and put it on the corresponding size pipe.

Use a hole saw to cut the piece the pipes run through and mount a matching second piece on the base to keep the pipes aligned.
