Highest resolution 27" CRT?
« on: March 05, 2014, 11:03:27 am »
I'm just wondering, but what is the highest resolution 27" (4:3) CRT that is available?

I see the Makvision 27/29" which supports SVGA (800x600) but I can't find anything else.

I'm debating whether or not to replace my CRT TV with something higher resolution for more modern games (i.e. Street Fighter IV, Castle Crashers, etc).

Right now 640x480i looks pretty awful on the TV, but SVGA is more than twice the resolution/pixels so it should be quite a bit more detailed, right?  (or would it only be a "slight" visual difference?)

nec xm2960 monitors displays 1024x768 with no probs with xbox 360 . the big 33 inch brother does even more . some mitsubishis monitors are also known for theire highres capability . some philips cineos 4:3 tvs have a hdmi input with downscaled 720 p input  .

higher resolution doesnt nescessarily mean better picture , it depends on how detailed the games were made . most modern arcade and console gaming titles are standard vga 640x480 p , only a few will look significant better in 720 p . for next gen console gaming u may consider purchasing a 720 or 1080 p lcd tv .

As much as I love CRT's, and am always pushing them around here, when I do play modern games from time to time I much prefer an LCD.  Just make sure to get something with minimal input lag.  (Response rate is not a measure of input lag!):

Apfelanni's assessment isn't really accurate.  Pretty much all of the games on PS3, 360, and all the current-gen systems, are designed for 720p or higher, and look very noticeably better that way.  The only notable exceptions are some retro games like Mega Man 9, re-releases like Street Fighter Third Strike Online, and some shmups on 360.  For those I use a 15kHz CRT, but otherwise it's my low-lag LCD's for newer systems.
