Handpaining the arcade machine artwork
« on: February 10, 2014, 09:25:15 am »
Well, today marks the start of a really huge project for my daughter in law, as she begins to hand paint the arcade machine  ;D

I have artwork on the panel, bezel and marquee but I never really got around to covering the rest of it. Her design is amazing and the first coat of primer went on today.

She is currently now working on layering up the primer to get a full pure white coat, so as the journey carries on I will keep the thread updated.

I really think this is going to look amazing when its finished!

In what direction is she going?  And can we see her concept sketches/mockups?

Sorry all, been a bit busy at work recently!

Well, here is an update so far, work is progressing well and she is just starting with the block colours to lay the foundations down. Its starting to shape up really nicely now :)

I asked her if I could show the mockups but she wants to wait for it to be finished before sharing :D

Oh, and the thing on top is a golden joystick made for me by a good friend of mine... its a replica of the gamesmaster one :) We use it to show the current champ as each year we have a big retro tournament and the winner keeps the joystick for the year :)

Very cool! Nice to see artwork being created the old fashioned way. Sans computers. :)

I recommend clear-coating it when she's done, to help protect it for the years to come.

That's really good advice. Art is looking great, it should be protected when it is done.

Its starting to take shape really well now, and the white lines have really made a huge difference :)

Thanks :)

She is planning on a new design for the other side so they will both be different :D

This side is also going to incorporate elements from some of my favourite games of all time, not just arcade though, console too  :)

No one says cute around here!  You pull up your big boy pants and call it '---smurfing--- cute!'   ;D  All joking aside this is really unique.  I would recommend getting a high res photo of it in case it fades and you want to put it on as a printable graphic at a later date.

Thanks for the advice and the kind comments :)

Well todays update is the concept artwork, which she is happy to share, and a photo of the progress to date. I have to say, it looks amazing in the flesh and I cant wait to see it finished! She has used characters from my favourite games and incorporated them into one of my all time favs, the original mario kart on snes, along with a blend of my two favourite gaming eras, 8bit and 16bit :) Oh, and you may have spotted super meat boy there too... I love that game for its old school feel and ultra hard gameplay, so it gives a modern touch to it all ;D

She also makes art videos on youtube, so she has uploaded a timelapse of the first section of the cab.

Oh, and it also got pointed out to me that I referred to her as my daughter in law, rather than my step daughter lol (I know, blokes eh)  ;D

Also, I gotta say, she's got some great design skills.  Believe me, it ain't easy making collage-type art and having it have flow and be appealing looking.

What happened?

Well, let's see. First the earth cooled. And then the dinosaurs came, but they got too big and fat, so they all died and they turned into oil. And then the Arabs came and they bought Mercedes Benzes. And Prince Charles started wearing all of Lady Di's clothes. I couldn't believe it.
[/Airplane II: The Sequel]

Several days ago, Meg posted a second sideart video on YouTube showing the lower half of the side shown in the first video (above) and said she was planning to do a Q&A video soon.
