Looking great so far! Before I read the comment about using the translucent buttons, I was thinking in my head that, when lit, they'd look like sparkling gems, so, for what it's worth, I'd vote for translucent. Sure, they might be a little dark when unlit, but with an attract mode or when playing, they'll look awesome, I'd think. /$.02

I actually agree with this sentiment.

Gold trim looks sharp.. nice build my only comment with the pinball buttons on the side. you may want to try resting you your palm on the CP to see if its comfortable and feels natural. Its the buttons are too far from the top it may not feel great.

Thank you! The pinball buttons on the side are at a standard placement that most pinball machines would have and the front buttons are comfortable too I just think the picture is not the most representative of this.

Hey  Guys! Here is a little update... I have had a few hiccups here and there, but all is moving along albeit a little slowly even though I couldn't get things as good as I wanted. Here is a little surprise I was going to wait for at the end of the build, but couldn't resist. The monitor bracket was CNC by  mameman on the hyperspin forums who is a really nice guy and great to work with also a big shout out to  jahilton2002 for the idea as he uses space invaders as his trademark monitor brackets. Thank you for the inspiration.

If you're familiar with The Goonies movie this is the open skull at the start of the movie

Here is is painted

Here is the side artwork for the cab completed.

Congrats on getting it finished! I love almost everything about this cab  :applaud:  Great artwork.  I may have missed something but what's the reason for the big gap between the monitor and the CP?

I was going to ask the same question! The cab looks good other then that. Might wanna rethink that bezel.

I gotta agree with the other comments... the CP is gorgeous, the sideart is amazing, love the cab but that monitor/bezel layout looks out of place.  You may want to reposition it altogether, or at the very least print more art to fill that space because it detracts from the rest of the build that looks fantastic.

Definitely one of the best artwork themes that I've seen!

So once again, we find that evil of the past seeps into the present like salad dressing through cheap wax paper, mixing memory and desire.

Hey Guys,

Thanks for the feedback. The intention was to fill the bezel with a graphic to carry the theme from the rest of the cab, but my buddy ran out of funds so as of right now it's been put on hold... not sure for good, but we'll see what he wants to do. As far as the larger bezel below the screen well... a lot of thought went into that and the screen is actually positioned in the optimal position, too low and it would not have been in a great position both standing or sitting. Remember this is a 24 widescreen monitor so really not matter how you position it there is going to be a lot of exposed bezel especially if you want it in what I believe to be the optimal position. The alternative would be to do what was done on the woody cab which is to put a strip a of wood to give it that smaller lower half bezel, but in all honestly it was easier to do it this way and again the original intention was to fill it with a graphic. However, glad everyone enjoys it other then the large bezel.  :)

I really think you should try to move the monitor closer to the center.

This is a tough one. I was going to say, "I recommend replacing it with a CRT", but in looking at the profile, that's nearly impossible. Any change of rebuilding the rear, so that there's an angled 'jut-out' to support a 4:3 ratio CRT?

Put in a larger monitor vertically or find a 4:3 LCD.   :dunno  Can always be done when funds return.

Other than that, very cool looking cab.

Yeah, a 21 inch Syncmaster would look so much better in there. The monitor placement/look kills it for me. I know it's easier to find 16:10 monitors, but if you're going to use one, change the proportions of the cab to be cleaner. Dave does a good job of that on his builds.

This entire project is ruined by that monitor.  It has to go.  Pull out the credit card, go to Wal-Mart, get a 32" LCD for $200, and slap it in there vertically.  Don't think.  Just do it.  Now.

PBJ doesn't get a lot of credit from a lot of people here, but this is actually closer to what I was originally thinking... The monitor being used and the placement of it is ... bad.

I don't agree! This cabinet style is for 4:3 LCD monitors only. And also the biggest motherf***** you can get hold of, like the 21,3" Samsung 213T. A widescreen monitor will ALWAYS leave a large empty space either vertically or horizontally. I love this build, but I don't like this cabinet style at all just because of the looooong monitor area. It's poorly designed that way. I would ditch the widescreen monitor and get hold of a bad ass 4:3 monitor!

But you can always rent out some space for advertising:

I get all the comments about the monitor... but it's one of those things where you have to see and play it in person to get why it's placed where it is. Needless to say there is no way to move the monitor placement its glued and joined with dominos, there is no going back at this point.. it would be way too costly. As for as the monitor, it's a quality asus monitor for the money and it's what my buddy had available to use and didn't want to shell out any money for anything else. Thanks for the feedback glad some of you like and for those that don't just be glad it's not in your home haha

Function over form every time - if the screen works at that angle for your height then it's perfect.

That being said - it does look a little imbalanced so you could use that space to put an instruction panel, or if you're not sick of wiring up electronics, a smaller monitor showing controls or a marquee of the game being played.

And what's wrong with girls with short hair? Bad memories from time spent at all-boys school?  >:D

just curious as i have another build in the work for myself as to what monitor is recommended? it's a thinner profile cab so crt won't work. Not sure i get why the 32" vertical ? and are there any newer 4:3 options or whats the suggested monitor for uprights that's non crt. I would like something that is reasonably priced, good picture, and good response time... what are the suggested options ??

No.  4:3 is pretty much dead.

He said the 32" because a 32" 16:9 on end would fill the available space.

The only 21" LCD I've tried is the samsung 21.3" one and while the picture is good the lag is horrible. I think there is a Dell one of a similar size which OND is using in his futuristic cab which may be better in that regard.

If you go to 19 or 20" there are more options but other peeps here can probably give you advice on the best ones out there.

The thing is - peeps seem to be more against the positioning of the monitor than the actual monitor itself as it looks a bit high where it is.

Have a look at the MVC 2.0 cab if you want to see the benefit of a large monitor in vertical mode.

I think your Goonies cab rocks though. The artwork is some of the best I've seen and really suits it. This is one of the cabs that I've been following from the start and it looks pretty sweet

Thank you for the kind words. A big shout out to Gbeef who help bring my vision together on the CP in which I was a slight unintentional pain, but what I believe to be worth it in the end and a shout out to Joshua for helping me build off of what Gbeef did on the CP which ultimately led me to the design on the rest of the cab that i ended up finish myself to the best of my abilities. Also, a big shout out to the community in keeping such great build logs which allowed me to even consider building a cab. I have a build in the works that is an upright that will use the same CP design, but different cab design that I should make a new thread for as I am curious as to what people think before i get too far involved then I already am lol. I have the some 24" monitor in the goonies build, but will reconsider the lowering the monitor with some more test mock ups, but as far as using a 32" in the vertical position it would be too long with the available space i have from the marquee overhang to the CP so that won't work as tested in sketchup.
