I got an XBox One!
« on: November 22, 2013, 08:33:56 pm »
First thoughts - it looks nice, classic almost like a VCR. It's big, which isn't something I worry about. If I lived in an apartment, it may be a different story. It is quite big. Boots up as fast as they say, around 13 seconds. The controller feels a little different but fits in my hands better. It feels cheap though, almost like it's hollow. Operates nicely.

Smartglass is awesome, well thought out, and works. The kinect tracking seems to work very nicely, after I accidentally linked my profile to one of my cats I eventually figured out how to change it to me. It's very familiar feeling.

I haven't played any games on it yet. I set up a huge cue of downloading and installing, and I thought they would install in that order... but they don't. If you add something to the cue, it focuses on that new task instead. So I went out to buy pizza, beer, and a second controller, and when I got home my xbox was working on Kinect Sports Rivals instead of installing ghosts. Ghosts just got to 50% installed, which means it is ready to play. I will discuss more when I am not gaming. Installing a new game is a mandatory thing which is a minor gripe... but not really a big deal.

Meh.  I was a huge 360 fan.  Loved it leaps and bounds over the PS3.  This gen though, Microsoft seems to have stolen the playbook from Sony for last gen.  Either way, not in any hurry to jump into this gen.

Good luck on the new toy though!

I have to finish all the 130 games I have not played on the 360 before I buy the Xbox One.

Then I have 50 games still unplayed on the PS3 before I buy the PS4.   ;D

Sucks to hear that you HAVE TO download a 500mb patch before the thing works.

That is a deal breaker for me.  If you go buy it and live on a mountain without the Internet how would it be fit for purpose?  M$ should give you the update on DVD when you buy it. At least the PS4 allows you to play a game without a patch.

Their guess is, if you can afford $500 then you should have high speed Internet.
If I had only one wish, it would be for three more wishes.

I bought one, and I have to say so far not impressed! It took about 30 minutes to load C.O.D ghosts. I don't care for the menu layout, it's going to take some getting use to. But my main gripe so far is you can't transfer your arcade games stored on your 360! I mean, wtf! Really? So all my xbox live games that I bought and have hours of time in playing them, records, high scores, achievements , ect, ect I can't play on my brand new, state of the art, ground breaking, future of gaming  $500.00 machine? All righty then! I know the idea is to move forward, not backwards but why take away something that was great?  One of my favorite things about the 360 was the xbox live arcade. Oh, and one more thing, why no Microsoft media center support? How the hell do you stream pictures movies and music stored on my PC? Am I missing something? Hopefully some of this stuff gets fixed or added soon or other wise this will be a big upset.

Give it a year or two, it'll be $200.  The 360 was.

But hey, according to Microsoft the Xbox One is backwards compatible.  All you have to do is plug your existing 360 into the HDMI In on the Xbox One and play your 360 through the One.  See?  Compatible!

I ---steaming pile of meadow muffin--- you not, Microsoft actually said that...

Downloading a 500mb patch is a deal breaker? In this day and age? Wow.

Well I fired up Killer instinct and had a blast, even though I only had Jago. The combo mechanics are the same, if anyone remembers the basic combo "rules" about which buttons to link up during combos. I think I got a 16 or 17 hit combo for my best one. He is looking a lot more like a white guy these days... as is Orchid. But the gameplay is very familiar, I feel like they captured the essence of the old games. The "host" voice is either the same guy or very good at sounding like the other guy. He is more excited for sure. When he screams Combo Breaker I fear he will lose his voice.

Call of Duty is a really terrible game. I ended up enjoying it by playing split screen on a team with my brother against 16 bots. Still... it's $12 fun, not $60 fun.

Assassins creed is great. Nothing really to complain about. Happy to not be Etzio. My old achievements unlocked a Altair outfit which looks better than Salty Seaman's lame coat that tries to fit in with the pirate outfit but really, really doesn't. At least now it doesn't look like I'm trying to fit in.

The controller is awesome, I really like it. Don't understand the reasoning to get rid of the start button... that has been there on every console for like ever. I mean there totally is a start button, but it's 3 lines instead of start. Why do that?

The Kinect sports was a bunch of fun on my own, I'm sure it will be more on multiplayer. Kinect was easy to set up and works really well.

The graphics, at least on the games I bought, are nothing amazing. Granted both are the first titles on the new systems - I'm sure it will improve over time, like it has with every system. I don't really care about the graphics/not a deal breaker for me. I am having a hard time understanding the new menu thing, but the more I use it the more I get it. I'm sure it will change over time like the 360 one did with those stupid tabs.

You guys are so negative it's hilarious. You've gone and judged and made a decision without even getting near it. I for one probably should have waited but I wanted a new toy. Is it great? Absolutely - it hasn't gone and changed the world, but it certainly has been a lot of fun so far. Is the launch lineup of games weak? Better than the competition in my books, but yeah. I wanted Watchdogs. I should have picked up Need For Speed instead of COD.

From my angle, it's not negativity, it's experience.  I watched as Microsoft did exactly what Sony did last gen.  Every time someone in a suit and tie stepped on stage they said something that not only alienated and aggravated the gaming community but they then tried to claim that what they just said was a benefit for gamers.  i.e. "Empowering publishers to allow gamers to sell or trade their games..."  The fact that a month before launch they spin a 180 and suddenly decide to re-engineer 3/4 of what they said didn't help matters.

Not to mention that literately the only reason I have Live Gold is so I can have Netflix and other stuff that are freebies on the PS4.  I don't play multi-player except local.

Granted, I actually enjoy the Kinect.  Yes, even the first gen version.  I'll be getting an Xbox One, but probably not for at least a year.

I wonder if that whole nonsense with "reversing their policies" thing was a marketing strategy, like New Coke. Do something stupid, then do something good after an uproar so that you fool your customers into thinking you listen and value their opinion. If they did that... well it didn't work as well as New Coke.

Bwahahaha!  :laugh2:

"New" Xbox.  Does that mean we can expect "Crystal" Xbox soon?

Hmm, actually, I'd really like an "official" translucent case.

I know that I'll own both (3?) next gen systems eventually.  I'm excited to see what devs can come up with in the years ahead. ;)  there are so many people in here upset about the new systems. They exist and are going nowhere for a long time.

I'm glad you like the new controller. I'm excited to mess around with one.
