Program run on windows startup?
« on: March 01, 2015, 12:43:37 am »
What does everyone here do for starting their frontend or other programs on their windows based arcade machines? Do you pull out your mouse or keyboard when windows starts up to start your program, do you have your frontend autostart when windows boots or are there any programs that you can have windows run on startup that gives you a menu with a couple choices that are control panel friendly?

I would love to just have a screen that comes up after windows starts instead of going to the desktop that i can choose either hyperspin, kodi, or jukebox software. Would be even better if upon exiting those programs it went back to the menu so you didnt have to interact with desktop at all unless you exited the menu program. Does this exist? Ive searched but all i get is the generic how to use windows startup.

Try instant Sheller, on my win xp cab I have it set to shell straight into gameex when I turn it on. For win 7 and above I haven't found anything that woks as good to hide everything

Or you can just put a shortcut to the exe program (example: mala.exe) in the start up folder.
Win 7: Start; all programs; startup
Right click the startup folder to open it, then paste a shortcut to your front end in the folder.
Any shortcuts in that folder will be ran after windows loads.
Mala also has an option to start it when windows starts, Im sure other front ends have that option too. (But I have had problems of the program not doing right, such as random errors, so I just put a shortcut in the startup folder.)
To make a shortcut, right click on the exe (mala.exe), then create shortcut.
Right click on the newly created shortcut, copy.
Open the startup folder (see above), then right click. paste. A shortcut to your program should be there.
Reboot your computer to see if it works.
WinXP us pretty much the same way, not sure about win 8.

Just re-read your post (I always ignore the instructions LOL).
You probably need some sort of a menu program if you want to be able to start different programs, but that menu program can be auto started by placing a short cut to it in the startup folder.
Not sure what kind of menu program you want but it shouldn't be too hard to build one, if you cant find one on the web.
With most front ends (Im most familiar with mala), you can have more than just arcade games in the menus. (Such as programs that you run from Mala)

The goal is to get windows to startup and autorun some program that presents me a screen like the image below. I tried just making a web page but you cant navigate with the Ipac (keyboard). I've tried about 10 different autoplay/autorun program but either they refuse to like to where my .exe file is and want to move it to its own special directory or you can not navigate with the keyboard/ipac. I wouldnt even mind if its just a window instead of full screen at this point. I wish I remember my programming from back forever ago. Seems like it should be easy to make a program that simple shows you a list of options you scroll through and select to run the program assigned which those autoplay apps refuse to do.

It's not pretty but this does what I want minus any nice graphics. Just text button in a window. Works with keyboard. I'll autorun this for now until I find something better.
