VGA -> TC1600 -> component cable -> TV = no picture

I was trying to replicate the process in this thread to get native res:
http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php/topic,121491.0.html

And I got everything hooked up, with a Radeon HD4980 card... but when I boot the computer all I see on the TV is some blips of distorted color (looks like an unsupported res, I guess) as windows is loading (I can barely make out the windows progress bar), and then I see a black screen once it's loaded in. I had just installed the new video card, so I hooked up the PC to a hdmi monitor to make sure it was working... it was, with the default radeon 4800 series driver and windows seemed fine. Is there some resolution or timing I need to pre-set the card to in the driver before I hook it back up to component?  Also, VGA to TC1600 is correct, right?  I saw someone had to use DVI to VGA adapter, even though he had VGA out on the PC.

Confused! I do have windows vista which I know I need to replace with XP to use calamity drivers, but for now I thought it would at least display on the TV. The TV is a toshiba 27a50 and component looks fine with a Wii.

Fixed. I had to use an external monitor to preset a compatible mode.
