Windows 98 & M.A.M.E. (don't laugh)
« on: October 03, 2013, 03:48:33 am »
So I got two laptops from craigslist for a cheap price. One is a Dell Inspiron 2200 and a Gateway Solo. The Dell is already configured with MAME v0.146 & MALA and is going to be a bartop build but the Gateway has been left in a box. I started it up and it runs decent considering its a Gateway and Windows 98 I just wanted to ask the forum which MAME would be best suited for this laptop. It is running Wompws 98, 4.10.1998, Pentium II Processor  96 MB Ram. Also which type of games would be best suited for this laptop. I am more focused on the Dell at this point since I am using it for a bartop build but I would like more info on the Gateway capabilities if anybody can help. I will eventually do testing myself but if I can get help Thank you.

older MAME like .53 ish. And get more RAM for it if possible.  Honestly though, I wouldnt waste my time on a PII

you'd be better with Retrocade or something similar on a box like that.  It's from an era where people needed to use a lot of different emulators because MAME was always a bit of a performance hog, even back then ;-)

Mame 0.36 will run the fastest. You can also consider using .55. If you decide to use a frontend go with Mamewah since it will use the least resources.

Older MAME like the others have suggested, but I don't think you'll find it that fast. Can your processor handle MAME roms?

I'm able to run most roms full speed on a 233mhz processor using Mame 0.36.

I ran MAME .86 (DOS version) on a Pentium II build running Windows 98se.  It ran most of my games (vertical classics).  I chose this version of MAME because it was the first version that had the Ms. Pacman fast hack.  Also, I was able to compile a no nag version (the .36 MAME was too involved to do on my own).

I also used GLaunch within Windows98se and it worked great!
