EDIT: I went with a radeon HD4890. Here's hoping it hits all the marks.
Man, am I confused when it comes to video cards and MAME. And I build PCs all the time!
Long story short, I am getting a component-in TV and a Crescendo TC1600 or TC1500 transcoder in the hopes of running games in native res on the CRT. I will go from VGA (or DVI with VGA adapter? also not sure on that) to component in, using this.
I know there are a whole bunch of Soft15khz compatible cards out there. But I am having a really hard time finding a card that is:
1. Actually available, not discontinued (or at least widely available on ebay)
2. Powerful enough to run all modern emulators such as NullDC, Dolphin, and Daphne, and Hyperspin front end, not just MAME.
3. Known to work well with native resolutions and transcoding
4. PCI-E
5. Good with windows Vista, which unfortunately I have on my MAME pc for now.
Many suggest simply picking up the ArcadeVGA, but then I am not sure if I even need powerstrip/soft15khz software. I am also not sure that this is necessarily the "best" solution. Reading other threads here, some suggest the ArcadeVGA card is overpriced/not flexible enough. If I were to look at a "regular" card for use with soft15khz, which cards are the current best to look into?
