3D optical illusion CP art?
« on: September 05, 2013, 07:55:30 pm »
You know those 2D pictures that when you look at them from a certain distance/angle they suddenly look like a 3D scene?  I was wondering if that has ever been tried with CP art?  I had this idea of a CP with the underside of the buttons, wiring, etc, all drawn on the CP art itself to make it look like there is no top panel; just an open space into the guts of the CP.

Dunno if I'll try it, but was wondering if it's ever been done?

Why not make a CP out of thick plexi to show the real guts?

Because that would defeat the point of trying to make an optical illusion  ;D

It wouldn't have to be like what I described.  It could be anything.  For example having character art that looks like the characters are actually standing on or emerging from the CP, as opposed to being flat 2D images.

Interesting Idea!   :w00t
As we all know even the perfect cable job looks kinda boring?
It will also show all the dust that builds up inside these things.   that said, id be interested in seeing a completed panel.

Why not make a CP out of thick plexi to show fake guts?   ;D

Use painted/printed islands and internal dividers to hide the real guts/wiring and use pincab-style toys (Like the 4-armed aliens + saucer from Attack from Mars, Bart from Simpsons Party Pinball, a Hunter/Killer from T2, or Doc Ock from Spiderman) with servos and animated lighting to create an enclosed diorama that you can view from above or the sides.

Bonus points for a TMNT or Aliens themed build.

Do you mean the type of optical illusions often seen in street drawings like this one?

These mainly work due to the perspective that is already there in the context, like the lines of the floortiles or the bricks of a wall. So for this to work, you need to follow lines in your control panel, for example the line where the control panel meets the inside of the cabinet.
The problem is that the illusion so strongly leans on perspective context that the controlpanel is probably too small (and the viewing angle too high) that there is a very limited context for the illusion to work. That way it will be "just a picture of the guts of a machine".

Or do you mean something like 3D Stereograms?

Gah! I was going to post that as a joke. haha.  Those pictures gave all my friends headaches. I just laughed at them while looking at the cool floating images.

Yep, that was what I was thinking.

That's a good point; I realize there are probably a lot of hurdles to something like this.  In fact, I think the biggest might be having plexi over top, since depending on the angle, you could get inadvertant glare.

OTOH, I think the ideas of forced perspectives and other 3D optical illusionry could be interesting if applied in a workable manner.  At the very least, it would be something unique.

Having seen this:

I have to believe an optical illusion CP is possible.

What you're talking about is a 3d anamorphic drawing.  Look it up on youtube and you'll see some amazing stuff.

Here's a link to the file that the author of that video was referencing -> http://www.mediafire.com/download/tvtbh3di3b560nw/anamorphic_setup+fixed.psd

Seems like it would be pretty easy to extend the grids in that PSD to the size of the control panel and then play with the transformation to match whatever image you are trying to create the illusion with.

So once again, we find that evil of the past seeps into the present like salad dressing through cheap wax paper, mixing memory and desire.
