S.A.M. - Stand Alone MAME
« on: September 01, 2013, 11:33:52 am »
I decided to do something different, been getting real bored of doing the same thing over so here we go

- Inspired by this guy -

I am attempting to make my own version with several tweaks. One being in size, after doing a few mockups I found his to be quite big for something that just sits on a desk. It will be a tight space in mine but I prefer it to not be a tank.

This is to fit any motherboard about the size of one of those small "Dell Optiplex" office computers and a slim line powersupply. I can get them for $20 all over Sacramento. It can obviously work for anything smaller as well like and Android stick or something but decided to go a familiar route this time and I already have some parts.

With some ideas and a rough sketch\blueprints I started cutting last night

Probably not the motherboard I will be using but it is roughly the same size. (pictured is also VGA+Audio to HDMI box & wires)

Had to come up with a clever way to keep the side supports small so as to save space for the internals. Thin but stable pieces.

Got an HDMI panel from the ebays and painted it black for the back. It will have two ports, the HDMI and AC socket (maybe USB too).

I haven't got a theme yet but will figure something out soon enough. Unlike the other stand alone panel this will have control panel art as well as a marquee art (still debating lighting it up).

More updates later

What type of buttons and joystick are you planning on ? (looking at the space between the supports toward the front of the CP there doesn't seem to be much space for the MOBO and joystick\buttons to both fit in there.)

I have been watching the other one too, hopefully I am successful. Thanks for the support :)

There isn't much space, especially considering that I am using the same buttons I always use that are rather long. But if my measurements hold then all will be well. All the larger components will be nicely tucked away in the back where the marquee resides, if I didn't put that there this project would fail (using a desktop pc anyways)

Damn, I might have to make it a little bit bigger in height. You were right about the buttons, I didn't take into account the length when the switches are attached. SO I either have to re-cut the side panels or use a motherboard from a laptop.....which I would do if I didn't just give away all my laptop parts to make space in my workbench storage.

Thought it looked a bit tight ! -- at least you found out before completing assembly ! - I only suspected because I ran into the same problem on my bartop build (I had downsized someone's plans to 75% of original size) - when putting the parts inside after assembly the admin buttons at the top of the CP were rubbing against the CPU Fan if I moved the MOBO all the way forward which meant cutting a hole in the back panel to fit in the PSU ( At first I thought it was going to mean redoing the whole thing but was able to make it just fit by making the cutout in the back panel to gain an extra 1\2 inch )

Can you gain enough room by routing out the bottom panel where the MOBO is going to sit ??

I guess that would tie up considerable resources.   ::)

It's not like you can use the current buttons on another build anytime soon.   :duckhunt

This looks like it could be fun. I'd like to have one for portability/ease of setup for special occasions at work. I might have to steal a page or 3 from you Cory.

Thanks. I like the height I came up with so I think I will keep that the same and make it a bit longer towards the back.......

"Stand-alone MAME"? Try Sexy And Mobile!

Besides that, the "A" in "And" is almost never used in an acronym... Maybe you need to call it sexy "&" mobile... Soo - S&M??

Anyone got any ideas on how to secure the bottom half of the marquee? Where it runs into the control panel.

Trim the depth of the CP at the back, so it creates a channel for it to sit in? Then, use some black channel molding on the top and bottom.

Maybe a piece of inside corner moulding ( http://www.homedepot.com/p/Stabilit-1-2-in-x-3-4-in-x-8-ft-White-PVC-Tile-Inside-Corner-Moulding-FRP-ISC-WHITE/202083289#.UiSc-T_pwrx ) If you can find the right thickness - tacked into place with staples or finishing nails from the backside so they don't show.

I love the support, thanks fellas.

I did some more measuring and have decided to say screw it and build the thing without re-cutting the sides. If it doesn't fit I might throw in an android on a stick but most likely I will keep the first one for myself and put a USB hub in there with a USB stick containing all the programs and games I would want to play. Like a super Joystick....

Shell completed. Time to pretty it up and design the CP\Marquee art and get to work on electronics. I might go with some laptop off of craigslist. I have a guy who bought one of my half-sizes begging me for one of these so it most likely is going to him.....don't hit me but he is going to pay $650 if all goes well

for the marquee, do it as you would do it with a speaker brace just thinner...

run a baton or bracing across near the cp same angle as your top, and use the same aluminum L-channels to hold the marquee.

screw in the l-channel to the baton underneath the CP.

Also, $650.00, geez you have a kick ass demand where you live.  Most people cant move a full size units for that price, let alone a barstick....Way to go Cory... :applaud:

I was thinking that would be the easiest route. I would have to remove the bottom panel (the only panel that is removable) after painting and screw in the L-Channel like normal then glue the control panel down after art and buttons\encoder is complete.

I like the feel of this thing, it seems like it will work out nicely.

Also Cory,

Degenatrons offered a cool way to mount the CP with no screws showing and still have it removable, I wouldnt glue it for maint purposes.

Make some access holes in the base you can screw in from the bottom of your CP baton, maybe look into making you batons a bit thinner wider so you can can use 1 1/2" 6-32 wood screws.  They dont need to be that thick as there is no weight.

Just relooked at your batons.

Just an idea....

I will be able to access the the CP for maintenance if needed by removing the base so gluing it down isn't an issue for me (I don't think).

The only thick baton is the 4 base ones that have screws going into them. I got a hold of an optiplex but plan on using it for one of the Half-Sized machines in progress. I have found two cheap laptops that are 100% working, one will go into this (if all goes well) and the other one will go into an upgrade to one of my old bartops that a customer shelled out some cash for to make better.

Cheers, more updates soon, working on the art right now. I figure I would come up with some custom thing instead of just picking out some art on google. Would be nice if I can get the CP & Marquee art to blend with each other.

Instead of shades of blue, shouldn't it be gray, with about 47 more shades?  :duckhunt

Come on, Cory.

We were just joking around.

“If we shadows have offended,
Think but this, and all is mended,
That you have but slumbered here
While these visions did appear.
And this weak and idle theme,
No more yielding but a dream,
Gentles, do not reprehend:
If you pardon, we will mend:
And, as I am an honest Puck,
If we have unearned luck
Now to 'scape the serpent's tongue,
We will make amends ere long;
Else the Puck a liar call;
So, good night unto you all.
Give me your hands, if we be friends,
And Robin shall restore amends.”
William Shakespeare, A Midsummer Night's Dream

I do prefer your artwork in shades of blue to Rick's suggestions.   ;D

Nope -- 8 hours until my next dose.   ;D

You're the one that posted the "Cangaroo" spoonerism.

I just provided an associated reaction shot with Roman soldiers instead of "cangaroos".

What color t-molding do you plan on using?

How close would the blue paint be to the colors in the CPO/marquee?

Scott

Black T-Molding, unless anyone has some blue they are willing to spare??

I was worried about the blue matching, but it wouldn't be the end of the world if it wasn't exactly the same.

I figure I could just do black paint and black T-molding everywhere since it is just a prototype......

looking good so far. I'll admit i think they are pretty neat if they are built smaller though. ITX machine, compact flash or ssd, single player etc.

This is rather small though. A mini itx would barely fit.....

For example, the buttons nearly touch the bottom....

This is the piece of wood that will secure the marquee in place. After installing the marquee I will then glue the CP in place and push it snugly against the aluminum bracket that holds the marquee together.

Prepping the Laptop for surgery

Must have been owned by a cat or something else gross like that

Taking apart the VGA to HDMI Converter

Boards mounted to the base panel...and cords. I don't like the length of all of them so I am probably going to shorten all of the cables and\or wire them directly from port to port.....I dread this process though

Also, the converter runs on 5v so I spliced a USB cable for power. I will run another USB combined with a chip to step up the voltage to 12v if I plan on lighting up the marquee area. This way all power is pulled form the laptop itself.

Everything mounted\plugged in, Windows Black installed and the thing works perfectly!

As I had hoped it sits fine and out of reach of any buttons and joysticks

 :applaud:

And as always, thanks for watching.

Keep in mind this build is a Prototype. I am using what scrap wood I have laying around.

So with that. Should it be black? Or spray it blue, even if it is a slightly off blue?

If you go with the blue, either match it to a shade in the CP (match the CP to it?) or go with another distictly different shade of blue.

I'm leaning toward blue, but my artistic advice always comes with the standard "YMMV" and "use at your own risk" disclaimers.   :lol

You know what I haven't seen in a long time? Orange. Not the standard "Kong" orange. Like a burnt orange. Something different. My two cents. (Which rounds up to a nickel now, I guess.)

Buttons should be here tomorrow. I have all I need to complete the cabinet one they arrive. Had the art done yesterday.

I quite like it.

Also, there is no place for this but here is the art I had done for a separate cabinet I am doing (full size cabinet). Figured I would share since I printed them at the same time.

Good thing that Mikey's not facing front. P2 joystick would be . . . well, you get the idea.

"Hey, Mikey! How's it hangin'?!"

"Umm, to the right!"

Would not be lying.

Is it just me, or are the rounded edges ... not so rounded? Was this deliberate?

You are correct good sir. And no it was not deliberate. Not sure why that happened. I traced the Slag coin template with a circle thingy in Photoshop then did the stroke thing and I don't know how it has the not so rounded effect when you look closely. It isn't noticeable from a distance but it would be nice to fix that.

It is the same thing on all of my art unfortunately, but the white sticks out the most. The others are fine.

While you're fixing that, you can fix that whole "A"/"&" thing too.

Did you do stroke and outerglow with normal settings? because using outerglow will result in those not round shapes.

best you make a 300 dpi image, create the first dot, then copy the whole thing and past it
then stroke it again and copy the whole image , that will give round borders

Did you expand your selection circle from the slag coin template? If you expand too far from the original the circle loses it's roundness.

If you make a selection circle and then place snapable guidelines to give you center points, you should be able to create a smooth circle selection at the size you want.

I just did the "stroke", no glow. hmmm.....

Did not mess with the circle besides moving it around.

This doesn't seem to be a big issue, I will mess around with it more but as for now I wont be doing any more builds for a while. Trying to knock out the ones I have going on before I make myself feel insignificant for not completing something I started.

SAM is complete. I have been playing this thing on the big screen and I absolutely love it. Will have some pictures of it being played soon.

I had a couple of small issues I had to deal with. Worst of it was after I put together the control panel and started assembling everything I noticed I could not move player one's joystick very much because it was pressed against the laptop hard drive!!  :banghead:

I had to remove all buttons, basically strip down the CP back to bare wood. I then recessed the joysticks enough to barely miss the hard drive this time. All is well now though and S.A.M. is just waiting for a custom MALA theme. Turn the thing on and it kicks into the frontend with a ton of games and console systems. Definitely taking it with me to the UK, might even try selling it there for a bit of cash before my trip back.

Cheers! Your bubble stand alone is looking spiffy as well.

What?

I chose not too. I didn't think it would work well considering it might draw the attention away from the Television screen.

awesome 4 reverse jumps in super mario (after you got the fire flower).
Too bad you didn't reach the top of the flag pole at the end   :badmood:

Haha, cheers man!

I'm a rebel, I try to get the lowest score on the flag cause I am cool like that!

As for the reverse jumps, I use to try and beat the whole game going backwards like that and can beat large chunks with only looking forwards to get a running start in the begging of a level. You know when you have played too many times if you start making arbitrary challenges for yourself to accomplish.

the more i check this project out, the more i want a tiny single player version. Could probably stuff an itx machine along with a small power supply into one of them.

Oh I was looking at the screen of the camera to make sure everything was in frame. If I did it multiple times then I must be crazy!

I like this idea, I was hoping this would be a bit smaller to be honest. But there isn't uch space to make it smaller as the CP is already 20". If it were a single player I could make it so it is much more portable. I didn't want to sell it, I wanted to bring it on my trip but it wont fit in an extra luggage and cost 60 or so to ship it (probably more).
