F22 Starscream G1 Repaint‏ed RC Jet/Quadcopter
« on: July 23, 2013, 07:17:20 pm »
I purchased the F22 quadcopter/plane to convert into a Walkera Xwing. I had ordered the body first and then ordered the F22 because I needed a quadcopter in the plus (+) configuration to use the Walkera Xwing body. A few days later I was informed that the body is no longer available. Then the F22 eventually came. Nice looking jet but I wanted something more science fiction. Enter Starscream.

Wanted to make one of this:

Could not get this:

Already bought one of this:

Did/doing this design on it:

It is a work in progress as there is some touching up and finishing needed. I ordered the Decepticon symbols. I made templates to redo the design on the rudders.
The paint added 1 gram to the weight.

What am I looking at?

A quad copter or an aeroplane?  :dunno
If I had only one wish, it would be for three more wishes.

It is a quadcopter with a jet plane body.  8)

My pictures are just the painted body without the quadcopter installed.

It flies really well indoors. The cool thing about it being a quadcopter is it can hover and go in reverse, forward, up, down, left, right, and rotate.

This one is a different plane but similar concept:

Mega bonus points if you were to incorporate airplane gear as well. Would have a badass osprey concept thingamabob

It has landing gear (three wheels) and can do vertical take off and landing.

Finished the templates for the rudders. The pictures are with the templates stuck on.
The colors will match the rest of the plane. I'm thinking of going with Tail A.

Thanks, I prefer G1 as well. I didn’t even realize Starscream was an F-22 in Bayformers until after I started this project.

I joined a transformers forum to share this project in a tutorial form once it is finished. I’ve been reading a lot over there and they seem to be cool with fan made stuff.
My progress will be documented over here though.

Showed it to some people at work and it has been suggested to do a Skywarp  and Thundercracker as well. Skywarp would need just silver, purple, and gold paint. Thundercracker would need red, white, blue, silver, and gold paint like Starscream. I am only doing Starscream for now as that is my favorite.

Rough draft of F-22 Screamer tutorial:
1.   Get Quadcopter/jet
2.   Remove body
       a.   Carefully pry LEDs loose from foam and pull wires out of channels
       b.   Carefully remove two tiny screws in body mount under sticker on spine
       c.   Lift body off of Quadcopter and put screws in safe place
3.   Use acetone to remove stickers
4.   Use alcohol to clean entire body and body mount
5.   Follow product instructions for drying time between coats
6.   Prime top of body mount with Adhesion Promoter
7.   Spray Silver base on top of body mount.
8.   Prime entire body with Adhesion Promoter
9.   Spray Silver base over entire body.
10.   Mask off everything except canopy for Gold paint.
11.   Spray Gold canopy
12.   Mask off everything but nosecone and rudders
13.   Spray Blue
14.   Mask of everything except what is White or Red.
15.   Spray White.
16.   Mask off everything that is White.
17.   Spray Red
16.   Put back together.

Pretty cool man, pretty cool.  I watched a great TED talk about modeling and learning using quads - awesome and versatile little toys.

05SRT4,
The Traxxas QR-1 looks cool and a G1 inspired repaint would fit the design nicely. If you got the red one then you already have a good start.

Le Chuck,
The TED talk on Agile Flying Robots is what got me interested in Quadcopters.

The first Quad I bought was the UDI U816A which is my first ever flying RC toy. This SH 6048 is my second flying RC toy.

Major credit to my good friend who is actually guiding me through this repaint project. He is a professional painter and it is interesting to see him work with the aerosol spray cans on a mere toy. The final product should have exacting details. The little errors you see are because we had to strip it and start over (needed adhesion promoter) and ended up running real late into the night. We are going to finish it up next weekend. I’m learning so the next one could be painted by me.
