Question about the barrel itself.  Doesn't the thing stink forever?  Just curious if it STINKS or if it's a pleasant smell.

I couldn't smell mine unless I stuck my head inside it, even then I kinda liked the smell of the red wine and wood, I guess it depends what has been made in there.

Ah yes, progress shots!

I've been a bit held up waiting for the control panels to be machined. They finally arrived last week and look pretty sweet even in their bare state!

As for the smell, yeah I kinda like the smell from my barrel too!. Can't imagine there would be much once the top is done though...

Finally a bit of clear weather and some progress!

Mounted up the control panels and recessed the screen.

A little more contact and t-moulding then it's time to start the wire-up!

The plan is to build cocktail cabinet control panels, slightly tweaked to fit in the barrel with a 60-in-1 vertical board running the standard JAMMA interface.
...

These X-in-1 boards. Can just buy these boards and solder some wires on them, or buy a socket where you solder wires? Or do you need an old original JAMMA board..?

Can't wait to see the end result! The control/monitor module looks great!

The X-in-1 boards are JAMMA boards that illegally use an old version of MAME. (Don't ask for links/vendors -- see rule 5 here:police:)

The edge connector plugs into a standard JAMMA harness that you can get from numerous vendors including Bob Roberts, Paradise Arcade, etc.

More that 120 days later...

Finally finished building myself a new garage and really need to get this project finished!

Fitted up the main console and confirmed a nice snug fit.
Added two programming buttons under the CP to control the game board without having to open up the barrel.
Fitted the remote speaker volume control down by the power switch.

Next up I'll fit the speakers and cut out a top board to cover all the workings.

What are those two buttons for marked T & S? They look like the two red buttons on the original Barrel of Kong next to his amplifier. Cheers.

Cut out the top bezel last night, what a tedious job that was!
Also marked out and cut the speaker holes. The plan is to mount a pair of Logitech 2.1's to the side of the main chassis with the small sub in the belly of the barrel.

Looks like it is a volume control box for the speakers as well as a headphone jack.

Yep, it's the volume/headphone block from a set of Logitech speakers. I'm using a similar set for my Flynn's build (logitech LS21 to be exact)

Think this is exactly what I was looking for in my thread on the main forum.  :notworthy:
I want to add a headphone jack to my cab but wasn't sure how to.
So I take it this is wired between the board and the speakers? Do you have a wiring diagram if so?
Cheers!

Mounted the speakers up to the main console and lined up with the top speaker cut-outs.

Looking neat and tidy now, should project the sound out of the barrel just nicely.

Not always getting sound out unfortunately, might have to ditch the 60-in-one board for a PC...

A bit of black paint and it's all starting to come together now!

Also dropped 4 small screws in the corners to hold it all in place.

Finally finished messing around with the artwork (thanks spaceclown). Pretty happy with the mock-up despite all the A4 page joins :D Keen to see what it looks like when it comes back from my printing people!

Also had a go at blacking out one of the joystick bolts with a paint pen, should look a lot tidier than the bare metal bolt heads!

The glass top I ordered should be here any day now too...

Hey I decided to use the exact same speaker system as you. How did you mount them to the sides of your controls box?

Just 2 little wood screws through the side.

Just screw the top one (near the speaker) as high as possible or use a shorter screw so you don't go through the actual speaker!

This picture should give you a better idea...

Glass and artwork have finally arrived, it's all coming together now!

Really not happy with the 60-in-1 board, will probably be pulling that out next to be replaced with a PC running MALA.

OK so the 60-in-1 board had to go, just not happy with the menu and game quality! Makes the finished job feel really cheap...

I found an old dual core PC at the office, loaded up TinyXP, MALA and MAME. Got everything working just nice then stripped it all down and mounted it up in the centre console.

Had to order an Pac-Mini from the states to interface the computer and controls so grabbed a couple of their servo stick's while I was at it! So simple yet amazingly effective! Good being able to play both 8-way and 4-way games without having to change anything!

Also found some little clear rubber feet at Bunnings to sit the glass on. Sits nice now and their hardly noticeable.

Im trying to find a barrel, they are not easy to come by, unless you want to pay 150-200 bucks for one.
