Marquee Critique please
« on: June 30, 2013, 04:54:47 am »
Here's a marquee I am knocking up. What do other BYOAC users think?

Might have used too much colour.

Its my first attempt.

Thanks for nothing

Wow, less than 12 hour hate bump.  Classy.

Rather than mirror the DK team I'd either split it up with Kong and some barrels on one side and jump man and the dame on the other - or do two a different game on the 2p side.  I'd also lose some of the gradients and go with a simpler color scheme, widen the rays, and widen the box boarders and bring them closer together.  Do Action Freeplay in the same color scheme as Arcade.    I'd go with black as your base color on both sides rather than black, blue, and green as you have now.

Mario looks like he's from a different art set than the other two, he's slightly different stylistically.  Might just be me tho.

You're welcome.   ;D   :lol

1. The top line of text is harder to read than the lower line of text.

The semi-transparent look makes it fade into the background.   :dizzy:

Do both lines like the bottom unless you intend the title to be "arcade" and the "action freeplay" to just be incidental text.

[rant]
IMNSHO if you have to put "arcade" on the marquee to explain what it is, your target audience probably has an IQ around room temperature . . . in Celsius.
[/rant]

2. The blue on the perimeter seems odd and out of place.

Try using either red/blue or red/black on the left like you used red/green on the right.

What color buttons/joys are you planning for the players?

3. Do you want the same characters on both sides or do you want to use one character/group for P1 and another for P2 since it is split like an X-versus-Y theme.

4. Why the horizontal blue fade on the left side, but nothing similar on the right?

Sorry lads. Bad day. Thanks both. Yep just trying to get something worked up.

Target audience is 'me' I will just go with Action Freeplay.

I know its a bit uneven but I think I am getting somewhere

I'd start over, personally. Seems very generic. Maybe make it match your FE graphics?

It gives me a bit of a head ache to be honest.

There is too much background going on.

Also not 100% keen on the name - but as you say, its your cab and only you will have to put up with it, so if you like it go for it!

Let me first say that it's better than anything I could do.  :dunno

But how about connecting the rectangles on top and bringing down the colors a notch?
Also why the same art mirrored, how about something like this...

Just a suggestion.

I'd start with a change to the background and go from there.  The gradient is a little rough on the eyes.

+1 -- THe current background and outline makes it look like 2 marquees thrown together to make one and the outline portion that goes through the text in the center rather than outlining the entire marquee makes it a bit hard on the eyes - Also maybe shrink the size of the characters so that the star fits below the text and move them in a bit

Something similar to one of these :

Thanks everyone. I appreciate all your feedback. JDFan you are indeed very talented but I have since scrapped the idea of creating my own. The thing is, why people are good with PS is cos they know what to leave out as well as what to put in, they have an eye for the detail and composition of a picture. I might just get something done. I mean get something commissioned.

Sorry to hear that - figure it just takes practice and you'll get a feel for it - you were off to a decent start it just takes several rounds of edits to get it to look like you wanted ( I always wind up changing things over and over and many times reverting to previous versions on some things before finding something I would use.)  Figure as long as you like the look it doesn't really matter what others think about it, so while it never hurts to post requests for ideas it doesn't mean you have to take all of the responses as needed to improve the work - just read the responses and then make the edits you feel would work to improve it and disregard the rest. (figure everyone is going to have a different opinion of what they like or dislike and how they would do something but the only one that matters in the end is yours as you are the one that is building the system.

If you feel you'd be happier having it commisioned then that's fine but if you would rather put it together yourself just keep playing with it and eventually you'll wind up with one you like ( just keep creating and editing by using various layers in the file for the elements and then you can turn portions on\off to try different looks until you find a look you are happy with.

If you change your mind and would like a copy of the .psd I was playing with to create the ones I posted so that it has the layers for the objects let me know and I'll send you a copy.

Thanks JDFan much appreciated. Yeah I will keep tinkering with things but I thought it was too much myself and in all honesty it was based on other peoples art to start with. I will keep learning. I'm not upset by peoples feedback, its fair comment although I like the name Action Freeplay myself. Pun on the Action Replay red cartridge devices for cheating back in the day.

I might stick to the coding.  ;D  That reminds me- I haven't updated Build You Own for ages...
