Independence Daysaster
« on: June 28, 2013, 07:21:48 pm »
Did anyone make it through say... more than 15 seconds of this film?

I was flicking the channels and found myself on SyFy with this movie playing.

I saw parts of two scenes. The first was some sort of discussion between a bunch of  :censored: in a SUV arguing about some sort of device and their plans for planting it on the mother ship. My first thought was, "Wow! That sounds exactly like the same plot in ID4!"

The second was some sort of flying split orb-like thing scanning some sort of wreckage. Wow... that looks an awful lot like the big spinning orb thing from Battleship.

I considered watching the film to see how many other movies SyFy decided to blatantly rip off but my finger had a mind of its own and changed the channel for me. :applaud:

I want my fifteen seconds of life back.

I don't know the length of this film but if we give a rating based on the asumption that it was 90 minutes long and I watched all of fifteen seconds, that gives it a score of ~0.27%. I say that's too high of a score.

If rating on a scale of 1 to 10, you automatically deduct eight points as soon as you see the word SyFy.

To be fair, SyFy channel does have a couple of good current shows. I particularly like Warehouse 13 and um..er... well, I thought Continuum was a good premise until they screwed it up. Primeval looks mildly interesting...

Well, let's just say since they got rid of Stargate, there isn't much going for the station anymore. IMHO I think there is room for a Classic SiFi station, like TCM kind of thing.

Ok, then. On a scale of 1 to 10 then the movie would be off the scale.

I should have been more specific. I meant their original movies.

Oh, in that case. No, they got crap.

When it was still SciFi, they would have a handful of diamonds in the rough. But now that they're SyFy, it seems like the SyFy writers sit around in a caffeine and nicotine induced haze and make bets with each other on how bad of a script they can come up with and still get the green light. You can even see it in how some of the actors act in some of their films. A kind of, "this is probably going to end my career but I need the money" or "I realize now that I'm never going to be the next Cruise or Jolie," kind of thing.  I had better acting skill in theater and I was just a light jockey.

Syfy's still pretty good.  The quality of shows has went downhill a lot lately, but to be fair all the good shows they had back in the day were actually syndicated shows that they leased....  they've just recently got into original productions.  Warehouse 13 is good if you understand it's stupid as hell and you watch it with the same level of seriousness as you would an old Flash Gordon movie.  Continuum is really good.  Alphas is good as well, although it's starting to get a bit "gimmick of the week".  The US version of Being Human is way more watchable than the BBC version.

Defiance is really good as well.  I mean the acting isn't fantastic or anything, but compared to pretty much every science fiction show out there today the acting is far superior.  The writing is fairly good as well.  The long-term arc has threw me a couple of curve balls thus far and coming from a guy who is NEVER surprised by a story arc that's quite the achievement.

I only ever watched three things on Sci-fi Channel (just to give you an idea of how long it's been).
Mystery Science Theater 3000
Sci-fi Buzz (for Harlan Ellison's Watching)
Twilight Zone marathon

The Battlestar series was good. You weren't interested?

The Highlander movie that they made was awful.  Awful.  Just awful.

W13 is kind of my replacement for the void that X-Files left behind. There was another series that SyFy tried to do to fill that void but it was so bad that IIRC it only lasted a season and has a forgettable title.

Primeval looks to be mildly interesting. Only mildly interesting since I absolutely loved Sliders as a kid but I look at it now and I wonder, WTF??

Try as I might, I really can't get into Defiance. I've watched about half a dozen episodes and it just doesn't catch my interest. It's certain subtle things about the show that prevent me from suspending my belief or even allowing me to enjoy the show in that corny, tongue-in-cheek way.

I thought Continuum started off really strong but for some strange reason, I stopped watching it, not sure why. Same way I missed the entire last season of Walking Dead. I just saw last nights episode about her friend/partner and I thought it was a really good development but, being sick, I fell asleep before the end :(

Im on the same page with you guys. Probably 99.9% of the SyFy made movies suck the stuff whales leave behind on the bottom of the sea.
I do like Falling Skies, and there has been a few gems.

For the first half of your post, I actually thought you were referring to ID4...I still like the movie, but it can be cheesy at points.

When it comes to SyFy movies, unless you are looking to laugh your ass off over the stupidity of them, you'd best keep moving along.
I'll exercise patience when you stop exercising stupidity.
