I regret to inform the forum that I've slowly been destroying this repair.  :-/  So far it's holding but there's going to be a spectacular 8 inch drop soon.

Ain't looking good.

That's just some minor aesthetic wear... structurally that thing is still solid as a rock!

So once again, we find that evil of the past seeps into the present like salad dressing through cheap wax paper, mixing memory and desire.

KIT DOES NOT INCLUDE THE GAS LIFT CARTRIDGE CYLINDER ITSELF.  AUCTION IS ONLY FOR THE HARDWARE ON LEFT SIDE OF PICTURE

Thanks for nothing.

I went to an office chair warehouse a few years ago and said, "show me what you've got with a screw base" and had the salesguy laugh in my face.  So, whatever, he sells me their $200 special and the damn thing is pulverized in a matter of months.

Got an Ergogenesis chair, and honestly, back pain was lessened and it held up fairly well.  About $1,200 though.   :o

That was just a quick search, and by golly you are correct, its part of a kit that could have been bad..... But in the interest of fixing that, it appears the base is fairly solid, coulndt you use a piece of that outdoor conduit (the grey stuff) and slide it over the cylinder ??

So the wood was tearing up the chair and looking like this:

But how to replace it without spending money.

Well, thankfully trash day came.

"Oh my god, you ruined that thing."  Shush, no tears, only food now.

Angle grinder.  Little spray paint.

Cut one zip tie just a little too short.   Couldn't reuse it.  I shall lament its loss.  :'(

BeauOOOtiful! I mean that! I love these kind of fixes! Sometimes I think of it as a way of putting it to The Man--in this case 'The Man' being a cheap & careless manufacturer who'd rather build a piece of crap that'll force u to replace it with another over priced piece of crap. Bravo!

Off topic but I had to replace some brake pads and didn't have the proper tool to compress the calipers.

Ahhhh yeah.

Instead of a C-Clamp, since I don't own one that big, I use a caulking gun with a piece of wood.

90% of my tools come from Harbor Freight, except I besides C-clamps I wouldn't recommend any of Harbor Freight's clamps.  In fact, I use harbor freight C-clamps to hold my other harbor freight clamps together. :D

Kudos to PBJ though on his tool hackery.

The crescent wrench was just being used to hold the washer in place.  I didn't have a washer large enough.  :D

An old brake pad was used to push the caliper down and then it was just a matter of keeping that nut still while you used a socket wrench to turn the bolt.  Worked fine.  Never would have thought of a caulk gun but I don't own one anyway.
