Help me out here, who is this guy and why should I consider him important.  Forgive my ignorance.

I feel bad for the guy, I really do, but I'm with the rest of the peanut gallery.  I've never heard of him and even after browsing his website I don't recognize any of his books.

I didn't think many here would know of Banks, but as I don't visit his site often, and just happened onto this the other night, more than a month after its posting, which can be a difference in these kinds of things, I thought I'd let anyone who might be interested know.

@Le Chuck and Nephasth:  SF + leisure state, mixed with Scottish wit, rant, and dark humour, and basically un-censored content. I recommend THE PLAYER OF GAMES or EXCESSION for a taste.

I know him from his novel The Wasp Factory. Freaky stuff. Talented man. Sad to hear he is about to leave us.

Yeah, he has perhaps as many or more straight(er) fiction books. I haven't read any of them.

I've read many of his books and loved them a lot. This guy is a great science fiction writer. It's a very sad news!!!

Well, you know, in a way I wasn't surprised. I mean, the images I'd seen of him in the last few years, he wasn't that old but he was lookin old. My psychic sense told me he might be short-timed.

And on that note...

It must be terrible to know you are dying and there is nothing you can do about it.

I think he still can do something about it, but it would be rather drastic, in the sense of being non-standard medicine. But what has he got to lose?

I told him all that in my entry there, but he may not even see it....

Goddamnit, I knew it. Last night I had the inclination to look him up, but I didn't get round to it. I felt his 'six months' may likely be a lot less. Oh well.

Kind of surreal an author passing whose work was underlined by immortality.
