Console Project
« on: May 12, 2013, 08:18:00 pm »
Hey guys.

I'm putting together a HaRuMaN Special to play just console games. I'm planning on running Atari 2600, NES, SNES, SMS, and Genesis only.

I'm stuck on a name, though. Any of you console fans have any suggestions?

Blast FX?

Combines the genesis's blast processing with the super FX chip used in the SuperNintendo. Maybe use notable slogans from the different consoles to create a name, just an idea though.

I really like the REPLAY Idea. Simple but has a good flow. Is this going to be just the marquee or will the CP and cab sides have art as well?

This is the marquee. The 2600 was my first console, so I want to strive for simplicity in my design. Here's a mockup:

The woodgrain front is a nod to the 2600. The cab itself is black Melamine (thanks, HaRuMaN/Ron!), so I might leave it as is.

I dig it, I am building my HaRuMaN special as well. How do you plan on building the CP so that you can access it easy? Instead of gluing in the bottom part  is that and the top of the CP going to be one piece with a hing?

My plan was to have two xBox360 controllers hard wired to the machine, but I may rethink that. I have a USB Atari joystick, USB NES controller and USB SNES controller that I could leave plugged in all the time. I'd have to think of how to store them.

My initial plan was to run a VigoSD encoder for three buttons - Select, Start, and Menu. I could hinge the control panel for storage, but I was planning on using a Newtrik USB passthough. My goal is to have it as pick-up and play as possible.

Heh.

I wanted something that sounded like it came out in the late 70s-early 80s. I looked at a list of vintage era consoles, but none of them either fit, or they wouldn't sound right being pilfered.

Well, a lot of late 70's early 80's computer stuff had boring names that tried too hard to sound technical. you know, junk like "XG-8000 Computer Station Plus". A 4 digit number thrown into the console name is an absolute must.

Throwing "Tron" at the end of another word was also pretty vogue.

I hate to be negative, but the fact that somebody is not only going to run console games on an arcade cab but are specifically building an arcade cab to play ONLY console games.....  You know that scene in scanners when the guys head explodes?

Do it right man....  get a cheap Blu-ray/dvd case....  put a micro pc inside, a couple of usb ports in the front and use gamepads.  You'll have a nice, clean, multi-console system that everybody will envy.

See, I disagree with you there. I don't consider a Weecade/bartop an arcade cabinet. It's an all-in-one machine. The benefit is a built in screen.

Trust me, I WAS going to do the stand-alone case thing- I have a dead NES I was going to use, but what would I output video to? A 16x9 TV? A stand-alone VGA monitor? If I stick it in a Weecade shell, it's portable, it's self-contained, and it fits nicely on my desk.

Honestly, Malenko's build inspired me. I saw how he did it, and I figured it was right for me as well.  :dunno

thats what I am grabbin one for also.

I have the full cab for that I want this for my snes and gens.

I made a rgb cable for them that is going to go to one of them EGA/YUV/CGA or whatever there called converters off ebay.

I also have a redant ps1 ps2 to vga converter wich makes them both look sick display wise on a lcd and same with the above snes and gens running it like that.

I am also going to grab the SLG on the bst for the classics and ps1 usage for certain games that will benfit it.

although I may end up with both of his model's though the full cab is a monster :D

Nothing obvious is jumping out, and anything with "retro," "multi," "cade," or "station" in the name, at all, is immediately disqualified out of spite IMHO.

Therefore, it's time to get a bit self-deprecating and non-obvious with the naming.

The Money Pit
The Girlfriend
The Tax Refund
Knob Collection

Maybe some Futurama references:
Raging Bender
Anthology of Interest I
Anthology of Interest II
Insane in the Mainframe
A Clockwork Origin

ok look naming things is difficult, okay?

I do think "Anthology of Interest" is both vague and apropros.

Yep, I've never seen Futurama.

And stop ignoring LeChuck. He posts some good stuff.

Nothing obvious is jumping out, and anything with "retro," "multi," "cade," or "station" in the name, at all, is immediately disqualified out of spite IMHO.

Therefore, it's time to get a bit self-deprecating and non-obvious with the naming.

The Money Pit
The Girlfriend
The Tax Refund
Knob Collection

Maybe some Futurama references:
Raging Bender
Anthology of Interest I
Anthology of Interest II
Insane in the Mainframe
A Clockwork Origin

ok look naming things is difficult, okay?

I do think "Anthology of Interest" is both vague and apropros.
What's wrong with Retro, Cade or Station?  ...and what's the deal with the pompous hipster attitude?
You said it yourself, it's hard to name things. Even harder when you shoot down other suggestions.

And ignoring LeChuck? Your big loss there. He's a solid member, and a joker, but brings a lot to the table.

Ah you guys a gonna make me blush.  Just trying for a bit of a laugh.  Didn't mean to ruffle Sand's feathers.  I don't really think I did tho, as it's been documented that she reads my posts anyway.  I see her post as a tongue in cheek bit of self deprecating humor.

I'm of the opinion that Retro, Cade, and Station are still great viable naming options.  Afterall we're not building for the masses, we're building for ourselves (mostly  ;) ) and the chances of some BYOACer walking into another BYOACer's garage and going, "Oh man, not another -cade!" are slim to none.  Besides, that guy would be a tewl and who wants to be friends with a tewl anway?

Not a pompous hipster attitude... I just don't like those names.  Is it a crime to dislike names that are played to death?  It's a matter of taste, is all.

Again, opinion.  My opinion differs from yours, that's it.  Don't take it personally.
