Xevious.....worth it?
« on: April 09, 2013, 12:16:52 am »
Hi,

im new into the hobby. My first intention was to build a MAME cabinet. I was scouring craigslist and came across a guy that had some cabs and some parts. So I went to check it out.

He has one cab for sale which I could tell was modded. I came to find out later after I left that the cabinet is a Xevious cabinet. The side art, and artwork above the screen are still in place however a previos owner changed the marquee, bezel and control panel to a bowling game.

Is a Xevious cabinet worth restoring? There are some damages that wouuld need to be replaced, however I would be doing that anyways.

Or is it sacrilege to change a cabinet of that sort of game.

Thanks!!

Restoring to what?

Do you want to have a restored Xevious?

You're not going to make money on this.  Put that out of your mind now if that is a concern.

"Worth" is such a subjective thing that we can't answer it for you.  We might be able to tell you how many hours, and maybe how much money, it might take to restore.  We can't tell you whether or not the job is worth your resources.  Only you can decide if you want it badly enough to do the work.

I am assuming he more wants to know if it is a rare/classic enough game that it would be a "sin" to not bring it back to it's original Xevious glory.

I'm no Xevious expert, but I am pretty sure that it was a common cabinet. If it is the cabinet I am thinking of, then it had great art as well, and I personally hate to change cabinets will full body side art as long as it is still in good condition.

What you might consider doing is making a Xevious themed mame cab out of it. Keep the existing Xevious art, and make a custom Marquee and Control panel that looks Xevious-esque. If you ever feel the need to later bring it back as a real Xevious, you wouldn't have harmed any of the current art.

That's a good option.  Much easier to do, too, depending on whether or not the Atari wiring harness and transformer block are still present.  If it's converted I would suspect they are not in there anymore.

Thanks for the replies!

Yes,,,I was asking if it was sin to gut the cab for parts and repaint it. I'll have to see the side art again to see what kind of shape its in. This is my first build, and before I do a custom..I wanted to work out any kinks on a pre-existing cab first.

He did have another machine which was really generic that I could convert as well.

Thanks again all!

If the sideart is decent I would think it a sin to redo that.  Xevious is one of the best cabinets ever made.  The Xevious art is better than anything, in terms of great arcade awesomeness, than anyone is going to produce now.  You would be undoing a great work of art and replacing it with something less.

I think you should restore the cabinet.  It has super cool art, especially the bezel.  Make it look like a nice Xevious, but only play vertical games that use an 8 way and 2 buttons if your planning to mame it.

If you want to restore it entirely, look at this link; towards the bottom, it shows related ebay items.  http://www.arcade-museum.com/game_detail.php?game_id=10505

But if you don't want an Xevious cabinet, don't buy it.

I would choose to restore as well. My opinion is...Eexcept for very generic cabinets, an arcade cab should be restored to what they were born as. Xevious is a pretty fun game also.

If you just want a MAME machine only, then I would keep looking or build from scatch, which is the most rewarding way IMHO.

IMO a dedicated looking MAME, or a truly dedicated MAME, is acceptable here if the harness and transformer block are missing.  The cost of finding the harness, the block, the AR board, and the Xevious board are going to discourage most people.

Xevious is one of the heaviest cabinets ever made.
Fixed that for you.  Atari cabs tend to run heavy, but I was shocked when I had to move one of these.  The flyer shows 305 lbs!

Most of my vids are Atari.  They're all super heavy.

Yeah, about that....

What he said. Also, you need a bigger control panel.
If you're replying to a troll you are part of the problem.
I also need to follow this advice. Ignore or report, don't reply.

This is a very common cab, I don't have any qualms about converting it. While the side art is kind of cool I wasn't particularly fond of the game, certainly not enough to restore it. One of the reasons I posted the pic was the mondo cp and an example of a conversion. The original cab has a flip down metal cp which makes it nearly impossible to add components like a trackball or spinner. If you want to mame it you have to build on something larger.

With the keyboard tray out like that, it reminds me of a recliner.
