Existence of cocktail head to head vertical two player game?
« on: March 20, 2013, 06:02:38 am »
Is there an arcade game for cocktail tables (vertical monitor), where two players (seated opposite each other) are playing the game simultaneously (Head to head)?

I would love to play such a game on my cabinet if it exists.

Wow...Thank you, it looks great. Also very appropriate as my cocktail cabinet is an original Space Invaders part II ;)

Is that really the only game offering head to head play on a cocktail? It's such a great way to play (I imagine).

Other than warlords, which is actually 4 player simultaneous, I can't think of any.  There are some various sports games (football ect) but they aren't very good imho.

I think it's more about timing than anything else.  Simultaneous play didn't become very popular until after the cocktail cabinet went out of fashion.

Warlords is great. Thank you for the suggestion. However, I guess you would really need spinners for that. I am going to keep my Space Invaders cabinet as original as possible, so I'm looking for 4-way games with a single button.

Oh dear my fellow arcade enthusiasts cannot remember Atari Football, with that lovely trackball that gave you all those blisters. No?

Here is a neat project:

Space War
Wizard of Wor
Space Duel
Sprint 1
Gauntlet

Yes I know they are side by side but I'm sure with some tweaking you can make them head to head.
If I had only one wish, it would be for three more wishes.

These aren't really orientation dependent.

Tetris.

Can you be specific as to the version of Tetris please? I'm looking for a version with head to head play.

I have the same problem you used to have. No room for ones legs when trying to use the cabinet as a regular table. As I have the original monitor in mine, I'm not going to remove the box under the table.

I imagine you could play Hat Trick.  You'd just need to remap the joystick switches.

Blockade (4-way) also is great rotated with the joys remapped.  You wouldn't ever be able to tell, except the score that shows up sideways between matches.

If you are using MAME then it also has the "cocktail mode" option which enables you to play heads up games such as Joust and Mario Bros. on split screen with each player getting a half screen horizontal image to play on. With this option many games an be played as head to head on a cocktail cabinet.

I think you mean the game above. It does not appear to be head to head for players seated opposite each other. That is the type of games I am looking for.

Not if the monitor is vertical (as far as I understand) as it is on my cabinet.

When you say vertical I assume you mean the normal configuration a monitor would be on a cocktail cabinet by Midway. Vertical for a player sitting at each end of the cocktail cabinet.

If this is the case the yes MAME's "cocktail mode" would be great for games that are 2 player at the same time. MAME will do (2) screens both in horizontal position, one for each player. They each see a screen facing their side of the table. This works great for games like Joust, Mario Bros, NBA Jam, etc. each player sees their own horizontal screen that is half of the total monitor.

I got it (at last). I will try the cocktail mode on horisontal games. I'm wondering how it will look as it will run on the original 14" CRT. Cutting the vertical resolution "in half" might not look so good. The machine is not running yet (I need an ATI graphics card for the PC running the thing). Could someone try this on a 15kHz monitor?

Thank you for your suggestion of the cocktail mode in MAME.

OP, you mentioned a 4-way joystick, and later shared that the machine isnt working yet....

I believe Space Invaders originally used a 2-way joystick

Just mentioning this in case it was an oversight.

Maybe you installed or plan to install a 4-way?

The prior owner installed a 4-way joystick. The machine came with a pac-man clone.

My question to you is..  have you actually played a real machine with those 4" trackballs?   Otherwise, your opinion isnt much value.

Personally, Im not a sports nor football fan... and XO didnt really look that good.   But the collector gave me a few credits on it, and
I have to say, it was really fun.   Using trackball to run was refreshing and more realistic..   and it was a real physical work out,
to keep at peak play.   I was exhausted after a few rounds.  Quite fun.

There are many other top view multiplayer games... such as a Tank game I cant recall the name of,  and Segas  Hot Rod.
Many cocktail games were just flipped however.

Yeah they very reasons you said you liked it are the one's that made me hate it.  Wearing myself out rolling a ball around isn't my idea of fun and on top of that it's football and I've yet to play a football game and like it.

You didnt answer the question...  which pretty much means, no, you have no physical experience with the real hardware.

As for games requiring Physicallity,  its all the rage today.

Are you also saying you would rather play a lightgun game with a gamepad, because holding a gun in the air is too fatiguing?
Are you saying you didnt enjoy Marble Madness, Crystal Castles, Kick,or any game that uses a unique analog control?

Using a joystick to simulate a person running is not only boring... but its unrealistic, and severely limiting.   Realistic analog control takes
even a simplistically drawn game, and makes it addictive and fun.

And really, think about it...  What is fun about football?   Its the running, dodging, weaving, trying to escape enemy attackers.

When a game character has unlimited fatigue, its also unrealistic, and limiting.  Even basic shumps reward players whom can rapidfire for long durations.. which can get very fatiguing.  The rewards are overcoming the fatigue, and pulling off some sweet moves.

The other side of analog, being throwing.   A good analog trackball football game allows for far more skill needed for passing.  It also gives u far more control of the vectors.   Samely, using a select system to pass, is again... boring, unrealistic, lifeless, and has no skill required.

Which brings me to wonder... if your one of those gamers whom cant stand anything that has any real difficulty?
If so, then I can see why you cant accept something like this.

X2 why do you have to be such an ass?

I did answer your question, I didn't like it ON THE ORIGINAL hardware because the trackball wore me out and that's not fun to me.

I don't even know why I try to have a civilized conversation with you.
