Instant Sheller questions
« on: March 18, 2013, 02:13:52 pm »
Been poking around a bit re: software setups, and I keep hearing good things about Instant Sheller.  So, I just have a few questions.  I am currently shelling to Mamewah the old fashioned way via the registry.  The PC is a P4 3GHz with 2GB ram running XP pro SP3.

1.) when you exit Mamewah to windows, are you left with the black screen where you can Ctrl-Alt-Delete and launch Task Manager, then run Explorer, or is it simpler than that?
2.) having recently installed SKJukebox, I need a *touch* of windows since it's a windows app.  Does Instant Sheller affect this?
3.) what does instant sheller do besides modify the registry and make shell=X.exe and change the pointers, etc?

Thanks!
AJ

I haven't used instant sheller since 2007-ish.  Instead I've just gone through the steps to minimize the windows environment, direct boot into the game/FE, and redid the boot images for a cleaner appearance.  It's not as quick as instant sheller but it doesn't take that long either and I still have access to everything I need.  I just have two separate shutdowns.  One by hotkey combo exits MALA to windows and one shuts down the system (power button).

I found instant sheller to have too many negative side affects although it has been so long I have trouble remember what they were.  IIRC Howard was pretty helpful in steering me in this direction.

I have used Instant Sheller and not really had any issues.  Howard knows way more about this than I do so I trust his opinion but I personally haven't had any issues.  When you exit your front end you end up with a black screen where you have to run task manager than run explorer.exe  If you rerun instantsheller there is just a big undo button click it and everything goes back to the way it was.  I have no experience with how it runs with SKJukebox as I don't run that. I would download it and look at the options.  You can look at it without making any changes.

That's basically what my solution does.  Sound like instant sheller is an interface that makes all the changes that my .reg files do.  I thought about writing an .EXE that does the same thing, but I'm the only one who will work on my cabs and leaving the .REG files in a WIDGETS folder within the mamewah directory is good enough for me.

Thanks for the info all....

P.S.  LeChuck, I just revisited your micro SW cab and I had to watch the movie again.  how do you embed the links at the bottom of your sig like that?  my html-fu is very weak.

I did it by dropping the image link into the url link like so:

Code: [Select]

I converted the links to my projects and the images I wanted in my sig to tiny urls because there is a 400 character limit in the sig and I would have went bingo.  With these I have room for almost two more ;)

If there is a more betterer way that anyone has I'm all ears.  I've been meaning to do that for a while and had a spare coupla minutes yesterday so got after some maintenance.

Thanks man!  That worked.  I'll have to modify the pics a little later, but that worked.  I tried it before but they were too long.  tinyurl...whoda thunk.   :banghead:

Lookin' fancy.  Once you resize you'll have to produce new links but that's faily easy.
