Volume on Mame Games?
« on: March 11, 2013, 04:58:10 pm »
Some games sound great and other are far too quiet(example NBA Hangtime and NHL 2 on 2)  I know I can set the volume for all games individually but even with the Master Volume All the way up on the game it is still real low.  But other games are fine.  Anything I can do about that?
Thanks,
Ricjh

The only settings MAME will save are the slider values.
It will not save the main volume setting when you exit.
It's a PITA as some games have a lot of volume sliders.

Equalizing the volume accross various games and emulators is on my "someday" list.
I put a volume knob on the cab for now.

Yep, I'm half way through my list, for setting both the gamma and brightness, as well as the volume down on the loud ones.  I have found that the loud ones need to be set to about -30 to -40db to match most of the quiet ones (some of the quiet ones are too quiet to bring the rest down to match).   The slider settings for the other settings excluding the master volume will hold their settings.   It seems like the audio cores could be made to match each others volumes if someone had the time and knowledge to do so, until then, you're left to setting the individual sliders per audio core per game. (and hoping they don't change the .cfg structure in the future)

Wait until you want to match the volumes in Hyperspin's videos too, that will be a challenge.

In my experience, Midway games are always very quiet, which can be changed in the game's test mode. The volume there is often by default almost all the way down. The good thing about changing it there is you only have to do it once for that game.

Could you possibly set your global master volume down to like 75% or so, then raise you speaker volume to compensate? If you ran across a quiet game then you could just individually raise its volume up from the 75%

How do I get into the test Modes?  Because it really only seems to be about 5 games that are that low.  I found myself lowering the volume most all other games to compensate for the quietness of the Midway games.  I'd rather tweak those 5 and leave everything else default.

It's whatever you have mapped to the service buttons.  The default is F2.
This is the menu that was present in the game originally.

Some of the older games didn't have service buttons and require you to flip the service mode DIP switch.
The DIP switches can be "flipped" in the MAME in-game menu.  Defualt to enter that is TAB.
The volume sliders are also in the menu that's accessed by pressing TAB.

+1 to BadMouth's posts.  The Midway games (NBA Hangtime for sure) are turned way down by default.  F2 will get you into the service mode where you can set it correctly.

OK I will try it tonight.  I had already went through Tab and adjusted some Volume stuff there...but it only helped a little.  Hope the F2 section has more options.
Thanks again to all who answered.
