Hey Guys,

I am looking for someone who can get to the harder levels of "Tempest."  I was doing some reading and found that some of the harder levels/shapes are pretty easy to get to for the professional players out there and thought maybe this would be up someone's ally.  I would need this person to be able to record their footage with a certain application so I could use the footage in the Short Film.  Shoot me a PM if interested and I will give you the details.

Thanks,
Rich

Theres probably a mame cheat to skip levels.. or become invincible..etc.
Just download the cheat file, and enable cheats in mame.
Then open up the menu in-game, and select the kind of cheat to use.

If you use MAME footage for Tempest it will severely damage your film.  Good for practice, totally unsuitable for Tempest footage in a film.

I am using Adobe Captivate 6 and it captures the footage fine from what I can tell,.  Big files but it does what I need to do...quick shots and overlay type footage.  Nothing major.
Thanks

That's not what I mean.

Anyone who knows arcade games will instantly know the difference between the vector monitor in a Tempest and the raster monitor displaying MAME.  They are totally different display technologies and very important to what you're trying to present here.

The vector monitor in Tempest is iconic.  To do this right it needs to be a real Tempest.

I see what you mean...That would be an impossible shot for me to pull off the way I have certain shots planned but I am using the real thing for certain shots and mame for others...Hopefully the combinations of shots will help pull it off.  Tempest is a side note to the movie but still in it.

Noted and I will try my best to get it looking as close as possible...Adobe tools let me do a lot but sometimes not enough.  We'll see.  Thanks for the input

If you have a beefy video card go download AAE (a vector emulator that can run tempest).  No idea if the cheats are accessible but you can get the image to look much better if you play with the settings, of course if you've never seen a vector in the wild you won't know what to adjust but I'd go with less is more.  Just getting the lines solid and smooth with a touch of glow is going to make your shots look a ton better.

NOTE:  Please no one go off the deep end on a typical AAE is bad diatribe.

I'll show you guys some screens once I shoot on Friday and we'll see how good it can look.  I have not used AAE or even heard of it so no hate will come my way.  I'm here to "TRY" and make it look authentic...hell I'm having a hard enough time with the actor's costumes...MAME/Tempest is an afterthought but neded.  LOL

It's was a great project that filled a niche but has been abandoned.  It's still available and you can find all kinds of threads on it throughout these forums.

Getting to level 81 on Tempest (including the bug)

I used:
MAME 141
tempest1 ROM (must bug is fixed in version 3)
save states (Shift-F7=save F7=load 0-9=save locations) to get to lvl 24
end your game with a score of 183,x46 184,x46 or 185,x46
enter initials quickly (30 sec timer running)
WAIT until you see the TEMPEST title screen the SECOND TIME
press start - you can now start up to level 81 (shift-f7 :)

My friends and I not being good Tempest players often play a start at
level 81 and keep continuing (down levels) until you can beat one and
that is your score :) I'd be interested to know what level you can
finish :)

I can get to Level 12 I think - The flat line...that's it :)  That's the best I could do.  I used Mame 147 Tempest v3 with cheat and can enter any stage but I have yet to beat any of them  :)  but this will allow me to get certain shots that I need.  Thanks for all the input.

Starting from 1 is actually harder than starting at 9. (as everyone who knows the game knows) Tempest allows you to start anywhere from 1-9....unless the game before was 12 or above, wherein it will allow you to start at the screen or two before.

After all this I ended up shooting in front of a "Centipede" cab do to restrictions on the "Tempest" Cab.  Fun shoot though...hope I can fix audio issues.  I will post a new thread when I release this short.

While you can't in general tell that well the vector goodness, the high score intro flash shows it, especially that beautiful purple.

The sit and wait strategy required by the red boards onward has somewhat disenchanted me from the game. It's quite a bit of work and skill to be moving through flippers AND over pulsars.
