iCade replacement artwork
« on: February 12, 2013, 10:12:39 pm »
If I have the artwork on Illustrator, what are my options to actually replace the iCade artwork?

I'm looking of a simple solution that doesn't include wood sanding or anything like that. Also, I want to have some artwork on the plastic control panel as well.

Thanks.

Vinyl straight over the top of the existing artwork would be simplest.  As for the control panel, same thing but you would have to do some disassembly removing stick and buttons then putting them back in again once artwork was applied.  I am fairly sure you will want laminated vinyl for the control panel.  You can probably get away without laminating the sides although if you have all the artwork printed on 1 sheet it will probably be cheaper then 2 individual sides and 1 x control panel.  (Which was something I didnt think about when I did my artwork).

I'm finishing up an iCade to PC conversion and am looking to do the same. I'm wondering what artwork you chose or created? I'm having trouble deciding what to do with mine.

I peeled the sideart off and sanded it. It mostly came off very easily, and only minimal sanding was needed. I've painted and sanded a nice black finish on it, but I don't think that's needed. Right over the existing artwork is probably your best bet.

I was going to do the same thing you're doing but I wanted a different control panel layout.

Are you going to create a new control panel top made of wood or are you retaining the original layout?

I made templates for the icade and make some skins for them... so far made a FIFjr and Donkey Kong. But if you anyone wants my templates to create their own let me know. I can also print them.

MATE! This is amazing! I got my iCade 2nd hand already setup, but are the original decals optional? also, can you explain the measurements etc for the top panel so house the led etc?

Thanks

It's a replacement iPad2 screen, along with a VGA controller that works with it from ebay. The glass is just a piece of glass that I ordered to the dimensions that fit. There's some wood panels I added to angle the screen and top panel. I just used balsa wood. Inside there's a small laptop, amplifier for the speakers, and the button and led controllers. Since taking that picture I've added a spinner on the front and LED's in the buttons :)

I'm still figuring out what to do for artwork

That's brilliant. I never thought of using the replacement LCD's normally for repair, in an arcade project.  They'd make some really nice smaller-form bartop projects...

Got any links to which ones you bought?

I've been looking at those screens as well for my next couple bartops as well.  There are quite a few on ebay, most drop ship from china like this one but I also found one from a guy in Michigan for a little more, my guess is he imports a bunch then resells.  The nice thing about the Michigan guy ones are that he mounts the board to the back of the display nice and neat, for more money you can find retina display ones as well :)

What are you using as an adapter from the LCD to VGA? Assuming I read that correctly.. :)
