Sony Trinitron KV-21FT1E: Cannot Enter Service Menu

Quote from: Me
I do now have a MAME emulation computer running through a CRT, and it looks pretty good so far. I have just a few problems that I haven't found any solutions to online:

1. Service mode. I'm wanting to correct some considerable overscan, but I simply cannot seem to get access to the service mode. The service manual tell me to press i, then 5, then volume-up, then TV on, whilst in standby. Well that does nothing at all, including turn on the TV at any point. So I press the on button again, the TV turns on, but there is no TT indicating test mode. The buttons all work perfectly when the TV is on. My TV is a Sony Trinitron KV-21FT1E. I think I got the service manual from here. Am I doing something wrong? Any thoughts?

...

I hope this is just a simple matter of me being stupid. Am I not pressing something in the right, uh, "way". The TV is, I believe, from Spain (I live in England). I would be very thankful for any hints at all.

I don't know how much help I can be, as I'm only familiar with US sets, but on all my Sony's the button sequence is "Display, 5, Volume +, Power."  I don't know what this "i" button is, but I'm guessing it might be a difference due to regions.

Hurr durr, here it is:

By "(TV)" it does not mean power on/off, but the TV mode button:

Thanks anyway.

Now, how do I save adjustments I make in the service mode?

Not in that service manual?  Whatever changes you make should normally stay active until you unplug the set; shouldn't matter if you just turn it off.  To save them permanently, so they're not lost with a power outage, on my US sets you press MUTE, ENTER.  It should say "WRITING" or something like that at the top of the screen to confirm.

Again, not sure if there will be something different again due to the different region though.

Weird: it is saving some of the settings, but not H-Centre. Pressing menu or power reverts that setting back to the initial value (shifting the screen an annoying two centimetres to the right, in this case). Will experiment more.

Wasn't paying enough attention: it wasn't that it wasn't saving the setting, simply that the value it registered was four greater than the value I entered, so the fix was simply to enter a value four less than I wanted.

I think the TV is looking about as good as I can get it for the moment. Time to play some games!

Four greater than the value you entered?  Look deeper into the service menu, there are offset values for different sources and such that can be changed.
