nVidia Project Shield

Not sure if any of you saw this yet but it's a pretty cool idea IMO.  Especially since it's android based, which means lots and lots of emulators.  I'm excited about getting my hands on one and playing but I would be hesitant based on it's price.

Eh it's not all that great.  There are ways to hook gamepads up to tablets and phones and that's all this really is.  As you said, the price point is pretty extreme.  They are estimating it will sell between 200 and 400 dollars.  For that just buy a 3ds or vita, and run emulators on it and have the benefit of being able to play REAL games and not the often cruddy android games.

Yeah, dedicated hardware has only been successful when it out-performs a PC, or (like through the 80s) when it was mobile versus everything else not.

Looks like it's finally on pre-order for $349.  :-\

My only hope from this product is that better emulation and retro gaming applications emerge for the android platform.  Probably the only reason they aren't more prevalent on that platform is the horrid control+display scheme.  This product does solve both.

Indeed.  I'll be interested to see what additional games might get platformed over.  Playing something like GTA Vice City on this would be imo easier than on a Vita.

Who wants existing games ported onto yet another clunky device?

If you're going to do something at all do something different.
