Classic Arcade Game Experts - Help Requested (begged?)
« on: October 22, 2003, 11:53:09 pm »
I bought an old Popeye and the monitor will not work. When I turn the game off I can see the screen disappear, other then that it's just blank. Someone insisted it was the power supply so I bought one from them and I still have this problem.  I have tried testing the new power supply, but I do not know what I am looking for. I get 25v from one wire and 5v from 3 others between the 2 plugs but that's it. ( I think I was scammed on my current power supply, but I'm a n00b so maybe I'm wrong )

The game plays, and I can hear the sound and I know the contrtols work because I can hear the related sound effects, there is just no picture.

The game used to work, as I have a picture that shows it:

http://www.ecst.csuchico.edu/~darrelld/pics/popeye4.jpg

Here is an image of the power supply and my voltage readings
http://www.ecst.csuchico.edu/~darrelld/pics/voltage.jpg

and here is how I tested it
http://www.ecst.csuchico.edu/~darrelld/pics/testing.jpg

Any experts out there that can confirm this is a bad power supply? If it isn't, what should be my next step?

I've heard of switched power supplies, but I don't know how I need to wire them up. Would this be a better solution for a power supply? I am not concerned about keeping the original, although I would just keep it in the cab unused.

I am desperate to get this working! Any advice is appreciated. TIA!

Have you twisted the brightness controls on the flyback--any response?  if the screen doesn't respond, you're flyback is likely toasted.  If it does repsond i.e. screen goes brighter and darker, then I don't really know.

when i say twisted--i'm talking small gentle moves--not 1.5 turns or anything  ;)

I'm not sure what the flyback is. I twisted the brightness control and got nothing. This was a little plastic dial with the sound volume to the left and Vhold, Hcenter, andanother to the right. Should I be trying this with the lights off in the room? It's wierd that when i turn it off i can see the image shrink for a split second...

I'm no expert in terms of monitors...

but one thing I can suggest is post a couple pics....
(front and back... and circuit board... and so on...)

then guys here can actually mark your pic so that you'll have more ideas on how to fix the monitor....

a pic is worth a 1000 words... esp when we don't know the tech terms for the parts....

good luck...

I don't know how you think this is a power supply problem if the monitor is powering up (the back neck of the monitor should be glowing).  And especially when you say you see the image for a brief second when you power it down.  Sounds to me like some bad capacitor in there somewhere.   Either that or your video source is whats bad.

If you have another monitor, try hooking up your popeye output to that to confirm its actually a monitor problem (or try hooking up a different RGB source to the monitor).

Once you determine its the monitor, I'd suggest buying a cap kit for it from Bob Roberts.

3 options:

1. reflow solder joints
2. cap kit
3. replace flyback--large black thing on monitor chassis with black/red wires coming out of it (typically one of each)

do a google search on cap kit in google you'll get directions--DON'T SCREW WITH THE ELECTRONICS UNTIL THE MONITOR HAS BEEN DISCHARGED.  you may have known that already but not everyone does so it is important to say.

A cap kit is always a good choice since it will always improve performance so you're not wasting your time and money by doing it.  I typed in some urls but then the board rejected them and i lost the entire text of my message--twice aaarrrrggghh so oyu'll have to look them up for yourself--have fun and good luck!

I don't know much about monitors, but I know this much:  If you don't know what you are doing, be very careful!  There is lethal voltage stored up in that monitor, even when it is turned off.  Find out how to safely discharge it before working on it.
