Driving Cab Completed...
« on: November 01, 2012, 02:29:41 pm »
Hi,

I've recently finished a Driving Cab which I have converted from a non-working Cruis'n USA Arcade Machine, Here's a vid;

Thanks for all the useful info I got from BYOAC to sort different aspects of the cab.

If you wish to read more about the project, there is a blog on the conversion here;

That is REALLY nice!  Well done.

I second that, really well done. How does it feel to play those games standing up versus sitting down? Shifting seems to be perfect upright.  :applaud:

Cheers, its taken a while that's for sure.
I had a look back at my eBay feedback the other day and I bought the Cruis'n cab back in September 2011.
It was fun building it but I'm mighty glad its finished.

Thanks, to be honest I would of preferred a Sit-down but space wouldn't permit, as you can probably tell by the vid  ;), but I am really chuffed with the outcome, it turned out a lot better than I expected.
As for the shifter it feels very nice as does the steering, the ffb is really sweet as well .. unbelievably strong!  ;D

I think I am in process of letting my driving cab project go and this just makes me sadder... because it is awesome! I love cabs with very focused themes/game lists- Sega Racing in your case. I'm not up on the emulators you are using, but no Outrun 2 though? But I guess it does use a 2-way shifter...
Completed projects: Pac bartop (Plug & Play), 30th Anniversary Pac cab (MAME), Point Blank (PS1), Centipede (arcade hardware- light restore), VS. Super Mario Bros (arcade hardware- light restore) Tetris Cocktail (SNES), Arcade Classics upright (60-in-1, then MAME), Multi-Raiden (arcade hardware). Pac Man vs.(Gamecube),

Working on: Pinball Re-theme, Homebrew arcade arena shooter

Much appreciated, but please persevere with your project.

Until I got the cab I didn't realise how bad a state it was really in, it sat in my garage for months as I toyed with the idea and I never thought the project would even get up and running. However, doing bits little and often things eventually took shape, and its definitely been worth it in the end.

The emulators I'm using are Elsemi's Sega Model 2 Emulator and Supermodel Sega Model 3 Emulator, the links are on the Blog side bar.
As for Outrun 2, I may be adding games further down the line and Outrun 2 would be one of the first to be added, I do plan to mount up / down shifter buttons to the steering wheel as well at some point. For the time being though its down tools  ;)

Nice build!  What are the Sega and MAME power switches for?  Can you explain how they work?

Kudos!

Cheers, the 2 plugs are on IEC (kettle) cables and run round to the back of each machine, where there is an IEC socket. This socket is wired to a surge protected multiple, and all the parts of the cab (monitor/marquee light/ speakers/PC etc...) are plugged into this. The PC is set in the bios to start on A/C return of power, so one flick of a switch and your away! :)

Very Nice Jolly.  I am very jealous.  I am kind of in the same situation as member Well Fed Games, where I collected all of the parts to build a driving cab but have made no progress for a while and I may abandon the project.  But one thing I see in your pics has me interested.  What is this Immersion PCB?  Is it out of a PC driving wheel or is it made to interface arcade hardware?  Other builds I have seen use an amplifier between the pcb and the ffb motor to get the voltage up.  In your pics it appears that the power to the ffb motor comes directly off the pcb... Does your pcb accept 24 volts?  Curious how you did that but great job!!  :applaud:

The immersion pcb is the original force feedback I/O board used in Global VR arcade games which were PC based and had Happ controls.
It connects via USB and the drivers can be found on the internet.

You can order it from Global VR, but it's expensive.
I keep an eye out, but have never seen a used one.

It does require a 24v power supply to be connected.

Thanks, the original plan was to use a Servo Amp and hack a Logitech wheel for its pcb as you mentioned, and interface it all as Sharkfactor did in his driving cab.
I knew of the Immersion Pcb though but also knew it was expensive as BadMouth said, so this was only an option when I luckily stumbled across a used one on eBay US site for £50, which came from a Need For Speed cab.
As BadMouth also said it interfaces all quite easily via Usb, and uses a 24v 5a psu which I also got from eBay for £10, and as I said to Well Fed Games, persist with your project it really will be worth it in the end.  ;)

Yeah, my problem is the line of projects in front of the driving cab- I think I might have overreached! I may go the route of a racing chair though (not as cool by any means, but I have a ton of console wheels and racing games). Racers are still my favorite builds to see though!

There's nothing like a good ol' project to get the juices flowing thats for sure. Good luck with whatever you decide to do.
Next for me is a Multi-Game Shooter cab but not for a good while yet... saying that I was having a look at possible conversions on eBay the other day ;D

Cheers Guys, sorry I haven't replied earlier been a bit busy.

Check out the blog linked on the first post for more info, or you can pm me or post in this thread.

Bit of an update as well > Just purchased a used Outrun 2 Up / Down Shifter with return to center which will be fitted on the left of the CP somewhere at some point, I'll have to have a jiggle the pushbuttons about me thinks to fit it in.

Very nice, I really like the colors.

The calibration screen that popped up when you first started, is that part of the software included with the immersion board?
