Neo Geo X Arcade Dock (Idea Phase)
« on: October 18, 2012, 07:53:54 pm »
I recently started learning about the Neo Geo and I have to say I'm quite interested. I haven't been able to play any of the games yet, but I really want to. Games like King of Fighters, Gun Lord and Metal Slug look really fun. I'm of course excited for the release of the Neo Geo X, a new gen way to play all of those great games. I was looking on the site and saw that you can buy the system alone for $139.99, or the Gold Version for $199.99. I thought how awesome it was that it came with a dock and controller to make it look exactly like the AES. Then I thought, "The only step left is to have an actual Neo Geo arcade." I looked at the pieces and realized it could be done.

So that's what I want to do. Come realease day, I'll get the gold version and make a Mini Neo Geo X Arcade Dock. I'll put the dock and the controller into a tiny Neo Geo chassis and wire up real arcade controls to the controller so that you can charge your Neo Geo X AND play the games on a mini arcade. I'll go ahead and post updates as soon as this project gets off the ground. Hopefully I can save up enough money before then without high school getting in the way.

It's like they're not even trying hard anymore.

the fact that the system supposedly has to be charged on the dock and can't be usb/wall charged pretty much makes it DOA for me.  I'm not about to cart around that docking station to charge a handheld gaming system.

Your post came off a bit 'press release-y'. If you truly are a high school kid, we're just busting your chops.

Yeah, I am a high school kid. It's okay, I just didn't know what you guys meant.

Yeah, hopefully the Neo Geo X does have a standard USB charger. It should, unless SNK is completely stupid.

From the FAQ:

Quote
How do I charge the battery for the NEOGEO X?
The NEOGEO X must not be charged using a stand alone power supply or USB cable. ALWAYS connect the NEOGEO X to the Docking Station to charge it.

Could be a fun project. The Neo Geo stuff is generally very well emulated in MAME, so if you have an old computer around you might just want to make a dedicated MAME Neo Geo bartop or upright... I fear they will never release more games for the X, and MAME has tons that might not get released.
Completed projects: Pac bartop (Plug & Play), 30th Anniversary Pac cab (MAME), Point Blank (PS1), Centipede (arcade hardware- light restore), VS. Super Mario Bros (arcade hardware- light restore) Tetris Cocktail (SNES), Arcade Classics upright (60-in-1, then MAME), Multi-Raiden (arcade hardware). Pac Man vs.(Gamecube),

Working on: Pinball Re-theme, Homebrew arcade arena shooter
