HOME DEPOT BURN IN HELL
« on: October 11, 2003, 07:00:39 pm »
First of al let me say this before I start to Rant

I nor anyone I know had the tool needed to do what I wanted and I dont have the cash to spend on the tool either.

Went to Home Depot a few days ago and I took my controll panel down with me to see if they could Dig out a small home on the bottom of the panel so that the Control stick would fit in securely as well as giving the shaft more room so it would function better.

The board I originally got and spent hours laying out and painting and $$$ for the CPO. The board was too thick and thus the controll stick  wasnt long enough to fit with the stoppers I got with it (happs 8way)

anyway Home Depot said they would do it for me cause of all the stuff I have got from them for my project. They took it into the work room they had in the back and said just walk around for a bit and we will page you when we are finished ... I told them exactly what I wanted and showed them how deep a hole I wanted in detail.

Walked around for about 20 minutes picking up a few more things I needed for some other projects. They paged me saying to come to the back and pick it up.

Went to the back the guy had a smile on his face saying it was all done and that it looks good that he sanded the hole all smooth and what not.

I got a little excited and said lets see it ... he got and put it on the counter... my jaw dropped and I said WTF did you do.

They put a hole right through the control board, scratched the hell out of the CPO that I spent alot of cash on.

He was like this is what you wanted wasnt it ... I was like no I told you exactly what I wanted and this isnt it.

Needless to say I was not impressed. The messed up part is that it seems rather strange that NO Manager was in when I asked to speak with them, so tomorrow I am going to talk to them taking in all the bills for the paints / wood / cpo and ask them to get everything replaced.

So far it doesnt look good at all

Sorry for blowing steam but thought I would give me experience with them, before today I was a happy client of theirs and now I want the place to burn slowly in the darkest reaches of hell

It's no wonder someone who isn't familiar with the end product couldn't do what you wanted. I've BUILT joysticks and I have NO idea what you were going for. I think it's your communication skills that are lacking....

I'm guessing you wanted them to use a router to recess the joystick but that's only because I've done it. If you described it to them as well as you described it to us then NO WONDER!

I'm guessing that was hole? That's exactly what they did, they "dug out a small hole"

Sheesh. I think spending less time in front of SF2 and more time in English class will work wonders.

If you build a frankenpanel, chances are I don't care for you as a person.

It is true I am better with computers then I am with power tools.

I got a call from Home Depot telling me how sorry they where and that they should not have done it in the first place.

They said to come down and they would replace the wood / primer and paint at no charge.

In the end Home Depot is now good in my books ... and yes the word / tool I was looking for was Router ...

Out of curiosity, how much did they charge to do this for you?  (I mean, not counting the screw-up...if everything had gone the way that you wanted it to.)  The only reason I ask is because routers aren't THAT expensive.

Just curious.

I've never seen a home depot with any type of woodshop. I can't imagine them allowing one of their employees to run a router.

Also I don't mean to offend you but there is no way you spent enough on a cab to justify special favors. I spent more there this weekend buying supplies for finishing the basement. Lately thats become a weekly ritual and I can't even get someone to help me load up most of the time.

The reasons they are offering to pay is because its such a small sum and they shouldn't have touched it. You probably got the guy that helped you fired.

It's the wrong time of year for April Fools jokes. :)

(tell me you really didn't expect Home Depot to do this kind of work...and then after you put your CP overlay on ???)

Home Depot is awesome, but they are just a store.  You wouldn't let the guy that works in the Auto department at Kmart fix your brakes would you?

Next time, look for a woodworking place in your area.  The sheer novelty and ease of the task would probably get you a good deal, if not a freebie.  But you might have to bring them a picture when you're done.

no joke I was a dumbass and took it into home depot and they messed up, they replaced everything which was great of them. as for getting someone fired, it sucks if that happens but hell I would have rented the tools if I had to as I dont think atleast for now I would use one again (atleast tell my next project)

You can get a new router for under $40, you should be able to find a used one for $10-$15. Never think of purchasing a tool for a single project, just think of all the things you can do with it down the road. Its an investment.

Another option would be to get a rotozip, or dremel, or one of the other multi-use tools out there and be able to use it for more things.

I've never seen a HD with a workshop, either - and _why_ would they do it in the first place?? I've spent, like many here, SCADS of money at HD and lowes, and I don't think for a second any of the employees would be A) competent to perform any such actions and B) be able to answer any question that doesn't start with "Which aisle has the.....?"

I believe you can rent tools, though, so next time you'll be prepared.  Or there's always a hammer and chisel.   ;)

OH - and I'm pretty sure your signature is against the BYOAC Rom policies.

This is really unfortunate.  They have rules to follow that are very strict.  Some of the employees bend the rules at their risk and while I understand being a "company man" and following all of the rules, I used to get mad at rules that just didn't make sense.

Example:  you don't have a tablesaw but need a 1x12 pine board ripped to 1"x10.5".  You can do it with a circular saw yourself, but it would take about an hour to get a straightedge set up, wood clampled, and cut made.  This is something that would take 5 minutes start to finish on the Home Depot panel saw (setup and cut made).  The problem is that employees are not allowed to rip boards under a certain width, and 12" is too small.  Some employees will make the cut, some won't.  I don't agree with the rule and while I have a tablesaw and don't need this service, I've seen people it would really help out.

However, the rules I hate are in place because of situations like yours.  Every time I get annoyed at something like this, I'll be forced to think of your situation where Home Depot got burned by trying to help you out.

I guarantee that if this guy didn't get fired, every employee at that Home Depot got a lecture about what happens when you don't follow the rules.  Instructions here were given by word of mouth and a communication problem leads to a customer going to a public forum and telling Home Depot to burn in hell.  It's probably not the place of an 8" dog to say this, but I'd be embarrassed if I flew off the handle like this.  Especially when Home Depot bent over to eat every cost you incurred during the construction of this CP.

I'm sure after paying for a control panel overlay that you spent $$$ on, they have learned their lesson.

Nothing.  They don't usually do this kind of work.  I'm guessing there is too much risk involved.  That's just a guess though.

Now that I ripped you a new one, here is a piece of advice.  If you want to do it right, the amount you should recess should be very precise.  Make sure you know the strength of the remaning mount.  If you just dig a small hole in the bottom of the panel, you may end up with a joystick that rips a big hole through the top of your panel.  That piece of information would have cleared things up with your Home Depot employee.
