So, yeah, I'm new here and I just find it hilarious whenever I see steaming pile of meadow muffin and smurf and whatever else to replace curse words. How and why did this trend start? I've never seen it on any other boards... Is it automatic or do people type it manually every time?

Auto censor is on by default (you can turn it off in options).

As to the source of the replacement phrases... enlighten us, Saint!
Completed projects: Pac bartop (Plug & Play), 30th Anniversary Pac cab (MAME), Point Blank (PS1), Centipede (arcade hardware- light restore), VS. Super Mario Bros (arcade hardware- light restore) Tetris Cocktail (SNES), Arcade Classics upright (60-in-1, then MAME), Multi-Raiden (arcade hardware). Pac Man vs.(Gamecube),

Working on: Pinball Re-theme, Homebrew arcade arena shooter

Most forum software I've worked with had a filter like this one.  The replacements tend to be a simple text file that is a list of the words to censor and their replacements.

example of file:

"Saint" = "Almighty BYOAC God"
"Slippyblade" = "Pathetic newb"

So that every time someone typed the word "Saint" into a message the software would automatically change it to "Almighty BYOAC God"

Make sense?

That's another by product of us old timers having too much time on our hands back when a lot of us used the IRC chat room a lot. Byoac used to run on a much more primative message board system and the auto-censor was added in during the upgrade. I'm pretty sure Saint and Woogie thought up most of them and others were suggested by the peanut gallery.  Honestly it's been too long ago for me to remember.

They are occasionally updated as well.  My personal fav tho is when you type B_4 w/out the _ you get --BINGO! Either that, or I was attempting to say "before" but it was too many letters to type--

I find the filters pretty amusing.  Softens the language when someone takes this crap (and this is ALL crap around here) a little too seriously.

I also find it amusing that words I use quite frequently make it right around the filter unintentionally.  Suppose it's that flawed, colorful character of mine.

I like "stuffed full of wild blueberry muffins". Although that isn't in the list. And in my experience it's a certain person saying it.

Is it still the case that censor settings are mutual?...meaning that your and the writer's censor must be off to view their profanity?  (It mystifies me why someone would cuss and have their censor on....)

it's kind of weird, because if 2 people mutually have their censor turned off then the profanity goes through and the other sees it...but if someone with their filter turned on quotes them, it's changed in their quote.

it kinda makes the quote not a quote anymore since they didn't actually say it.  :dunno

It's a violation of forum rules to workaround the autocensor.  :police:

Enlighten me.  What is so terrible with the word smurf?

That is not something for us mere mortals to contemplate.
We only need know that Saint deemed it necessary to autocensor.

Saint loves "The Smurfs" when he was a lad.

It all concluded with the CBC buying the Smurf franchise back in 1989. Someone hadn't realized that, in converting all the episodes to french for play in Quebec, the tapes supplied where not copies, but in fact the master tapes... all the episodes had been over written and all that remained was poorly dubbed versions of "Les Schtroumpfs"

Saint was never the same again.
