Is it best to play Mame roms in a low desktop resolution, like 640x480 or does running at 1024x768 give the same picture?  Any disadvantages to using a particular resolution or can you use anything?  (I have a 17" 5:4 1280x1024 monitor and I run games in 1024x768 mostly as running at 1280x1024 it doesn't go full screen)

Unless your monitor can support the actual low resolution of the game, I think the best thing is to run MAME at the highest (or native) resolution your monitor can support and let MAME's effects scale the game.
