The Sapphires
« on: September 01, 2012, 07:05:01 am »
Saw this last night. Based on a true story, it's about 4 aboriginal girls who end up forming a soul group and performing for US troops in Vietnam. Chris O'Dowd (IT Crowd, Bridesmaids) stars as their manager. I expected more from this movie, just didn't grab me by the balls. I was excited about Jessica Mauboy, who plays the lead singer, since she is from my home town. She is a good singer, but not a great actress. Debra Mailman is a seasoned actress, but no singer. The singing in the movie is good though, since they have other people do Mailman and the other two. I think Chris does his own singing  ;D

I think this is one you might enjoy if your wife is pestering you to take her to the movies.

3/5 from me.

Quote
my score for recent movies you may have seen:

5/5 - The Way Back, The Kings Speech, Michael Clayton, In Bruges, Gran Torino, Mary and Max

4.5/5 - Taken, Iron Man, Reign Over Me, Watchmen, The girl with the dragon tattoo

4/5 - True Grit, Traitor, Bedtime Stories, Sunshine, pineapple express

3.5/5 - 300, Max Payne, You dont mess with the Zohan, Yes Man

3/5 - That new Indiana Jones flick, Disturbia, That new TMNT flick,

2.5/5 - Angels and Demons

2/5 - The Love Guru. Note: My 2 is probably someone elses 1. Just leaving room for worse!

Good catch, also, why is one wearing Marine insignia on one arm and Army on the other, or are my eyes wonky?  All that aside, I'm going to give this a watch.

Dunno. If you were in the armed services, and your job was to vet entertainers, my guess is you aren't exactly 4 star material  ;D

That's a whole other topic. The short of it is that officers and office pogues are little different than their private sector counterparts.

Anyways, I thought it was the lighting. But now I see. They put service shirt chevrons on their blouses - except for old boy's on the right left shoulder. DOH (X2).

Well, I wouldn't get too hung up on whatever that means. You see that panel for all of about 1 minute. There have been much larger continuity/accuracy errors made in the history of cinema...

I've only seen the poster for this and had my usual, "THEY'RE RUINING CHRIS O'DOWD!" reaction.

This case is stupidity or/and laziness.

Honestly, unless you are OCD, it shouldn't effect whether or not you enjoy the movie...

Honestly, unless you are OCD...

We're talking about Marines. Regardless, and unless the choice of actors and all were some intentional satire, things like this call into question the historical accuracy of the story tellers.

Put it this way, Danny: if it were aussie football, as an utterly non-sport watching entity, I wouldn't give a ---fudgesicle---. But in the sense of context and accuracy, I'd want it to be correct.

Hey wow. The Sapphires is at 91% at Rotten Tomatoes. A higher rating than I give it, but it's obviously doing well, so good on 'em (",)
