dear all

I have just installed an ATI graphics card (X300) so i can get more resolutions in the registry, as before i was using a geforce (5700 LE)

When i had my geforce card in i could make minor adjustments to the refresh rate and position in powerstrip on the fly, the problem is now although everything is working ok, i cannot make fine adjustments with Powerstrip on my ATI card - especially on low resolutions like 256x224. I use Winmodelines to add resolutions and when i make just tiny changes in powerstrip, with refresh rate, width or height the whole screen goes haywire, scrambled and i can't see a thing, for example a lot of the modelines i've added from the modelines site might give a refresh of 61hz for example rather than dead on 60hz, and some arcade games need tweaking too, which i could do without any problem on my geforce using the same programs

although on the ati i do seem to be able to make slight adjustments with higher resolutions like 640x480, 640x240 etc etc but just not with lower resolutions,  as i thought that ATI would be better for low resolutions, as for example it displays 256x224 perfectly without borders (on geforce i got big borders left and right so i used 512x224)

also i'm using the recommended version of catalyst (6.5) and i've also tried soft15k enabled and disabled, but i still can't tweak the low resolutions moderately

thanks very much

To confirm, you can get into these resolutions just fine, and you don't get major problems until try correct your geometry and tweak refresh rate.  Right?

If the problems you're describing are coming up when you start making adjustments, you're probably straying too far from the scan rates your monitor is capable of displaying.  In low res, horizontal scan rate should be around 15.750kHz.

What kind of monitor are you using?  Some are more lenient than others.

I'm assuming you're using the advanced timing options in Powerstrip.  Are you using the arrows on the left, or adjusting the individual values on the right.  You need to read up on front porch, back porch, and sync width.  By adjusting these correctly, you may be able to fix your geometry without changing the scan rate too much.
