Gravity Falls?
« on: August 01, 2012, 09:56:44 am »
Anyone else watch Gravity Falls on Disney?

It's by far the best new cartoon that I've seen in a long time.  If I weren't so far into my current cab, I'd change the theme to Gravity Falls.
A lot of humor, weird and an all around good show. The cast is amazing as well.

Just checked out some clips. Seems like it tries too hard to be weird, but I do like that they have Kristen Schaal doing Mabel's voice. (She's better as Louise on Bob's Burgers, though)

Edit: I see they have two full episodes on here. I'll check out more of it before rushing to judgment.

I have a slightly embarrassing addiction to both Adventure Time and Regular Show.  The writing on Regular Show is really good and AT fills the same void that Ren and Stimpy did all those years ago, only in a slightly less threatening wavy arm kinda way.

Adventure Time is pretty good, but Regular Show is GREAT. My wife started watching them while she was laid off and bought the DVDs. Hell, she even got me to watch some My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic, which ain't half bad.

All of the above. My kids adore AT.

GF is OK but I've only seen two or three episodes, not enough to really like or dislike a show of this calibre. It does have a lot of potential and I thino it's a far better formula than the nonsense crap like Wizards of Waverly Place.

I'm not sure why but GF reminds me alot of the Gross Pointe comics. I keep waiting for the werewolf character to make an appearance.

AT is the best.  Our whole family loves it.  Regular Show is great little oddball show, but we prefer AT a little more.

I didn't like Adventure Time at first, but like most shows, the first season was kinda junk.  I recently re-visited it and the show is much better.  Things like a complex plot and multiple character developments really help any show.  That's what Regular Show is missing.....it's cool to have wacky adventures, but it's also nice to have a sotry that doesn't just end with a single episode and is never re-visited again.

I can't stand the animation in anything in the last......at least ten years. Especially Justice League and anything like that. Somewhere in the late 90s, they started drawing people unlike people. Some of the last great animation were Ghost in the Shell, and Mononoke Hime.

Adventure Time definitely has an overall plot that spans multiple episodes, and similar to prime time dramas they'll visit it for one or two episodes, then go to throwaway stories that generally have no bearing.  A few of those plots are the zombie episodes (stopped at just two), and the Lich King, which has had at least some relevance to about 4 or 5 that I can recall.  The current arc between Finn and Flame Princess has had 3 or so.

Regular Show has had a few brief moments where they reference previous shows.  Recently Mordecai had a flashback to the episodes when he microwaved a bunch of clocks and killed Rigby.  There's definitely no encompassing story over all the shows other than Mordecai and Margaret's relationship.

I can do a pretty good Lumpy Space Princess voice.

Anyone seen the previews for the new Spiderman cartoon?  Boy, that looks terrible.

Flame Princess is probably the most dramatic change to the story arc, looks like they've nearly severed any relationship to Bubblegum. I just hope the next new episode isn't some "it's all a dream" like what Married with Children did to hide Peggy's miscarriage or the final episode to that Barr show....

I was just asked by my daycare to stop allowing my kids to watch AT because of all the violence, go figure.

You know what time it is?    Time to find a new daycare!

Finn's relationship with Bubblegum is just starting imho.  She didn't have any competition before so of course she didn't give him the time of day.  Women can't stand to see anybody happy though, so she'll gradually start pursuing him now.  ;)  Seriously though, this was hinted at during the last second or so of the most recent FP episode.

In the next "dream sequence" episode, expect Finn to become conflicted as he tries to sort out his feelings between the two.

Blame John Kricfalusi.

Blame budget restraints.  Cartoons have to be drawn simplier to reduce costs.  This is why shows in the "Bruce Timmverse"  like Batman started out very traditional and evolved into this very angular style by the time Justice League came out.  Straight lines are cheaper to animate.  Anime style is also cheaper to animate, again for the same reasons.

That being said, with the exception of feature films, I can't remember any time in which people were drawn realistically in cartoons.  Before you start talking about shows like gi-joe, the old thundercats, ect... so back and watch those.  Yeah it was a more realistic style, but the quality was horrible, almost unwatchable by today's standards.  They looked that bad, again, because of budget restaints.  In the mid to late 90's animators figured out that if they drew their characters simplier, that there would be less mistakes.  Even if you go back and look at the first couple of seasons of Batman, when it was drawn more traditionally, you'll find tons of animation errors and glitches.  In subsequent seasons the characters were simplified and the errors disappeared.

So it's a balance really.  Also Avatar, The legend of Kora, Black Dynamite, The Boondocks, Archer, and Metalocalypse would like to have a word with you.  And that's just the ones I can think of off the top of my head.  ;)

So there's a new Arcade Themed Gravity Falls this week on friday night.  I downloaded it a few days ago and it's centered around the main character bringing a 'Street Fighter' arcade character to life to help him in a fight.  I found myself giggling quite a few times to the game references.

First stop the crate and barrel factory (some barrel jumping and donkey kong music)
a run through a restaurant ending in an uppercut "All You Can!...eat"

plenty more good references in the remainder of the show.

Watch it if you get the chance.

Watched this episode with my kids today.  Or I should say they made me watch it.   What a riot.  Whoever wrote it really gets arcade games.  The scene where the "Ken" character is told to stand still was hilarious.  The "All You Can!...Eat" was funny as well.

Yeah, I saw that hint as well. But by now (as of this posting) though, they've made it adamantly clear the type of relationship the pair has. BP knows it and has drawn the lines very clearly, while Finn is just now learning what those lines are. The relationship between Fin and FP is a real struggle for the pair so it should be interesting where they take that.

LR's pregnancy isn't a real surprise, they've hinted heavily at that. I'm just surprised that they would even take it that far. I kind of figured the show would dance around that subject but never actually approach it. Jake's response is a little strange though, I'm not sure what to make of it.
