Questions on MAME performance
« on: July 16, 2012, 05:03:31 am »
Hi. Just a few questions because I'm upgrading to a Core2Duo.

Will I get a significant improvent in performance if I compile MAME for 64 bits?

Is MAME 64 bits made for 64 bit processors or for 64 bit Oss?

Do I need to upgrade from Windows XP 32 bits to Windows XP 64 bits to benefit from the extra performance?

Have you compared the performance of Cave Hitachi SH3 games with 32 bit and 64 bit? Those are the games that I'm worried about in terms of performance.

It depends on the game, but in general, using a 64-bit OS results in a noticeable performance boost.

MAME64 needs a 64-bit OS to work.

If you aren't using a 64-bit OS, having a 64 bit processor will make no difference.
So yes, you need to upgrade to XP64 or some other 64-bit OS.

I haven't compared those particular games, but processor speed is more important than the OS.
You can try them with XP32 and if they're just shy of running at 100% speed, the OS upgrade would probably get you to 100%.
If all the games you want to play are already running at 100%, then don't bother with the OS upgrade.  :P

Like badmouth said it's all about what processor you have. Those particular games are cpu hogs especially muchi muchi pork and pink sweets. I had minor slowdowns at intense times running 32bit xp and no slowdowns running 7 64bit. Both with dual core @4ghz. There is a high probability that you will want to upgrade to 64bit to have them running 100%

I've been thinking about xp 64bit myself for a while but never switched because my act-lab lightguns dont have a 64bit driver.  since i can no longer use my act-labs with the new screen i have (will need to upgrade to ultimarc guns), i'm thinking of making the switch again.

are there any resources out there to help a user decide the hw/sw compatibility?

act-lab lightguns dont have a 64bit driver.

Glad you mentioned that.  Upgrading my main setup to xp64 has been on the to-do list for a while.
I never considered the light guns not working.  Definitely would have been a buzzkill.
Oh well, one less thing to do.  :)
