Olympic gymnastics trials
« on: July 02, 2012, 02:56:38 am »
Don't know if others here are interested, but I just spent four days attending each Olympic gymnastic trial with the finale tonight.  One of the few things in my life I'll never forget.  Seeing these athletes so close I could see muscles flex and twitch.  Truly amazing stuff.  Funnily enough my family ended up with seats that were pretty frequent background shots during the men's rings and women's balance beam.  Anyone care to guess who we are?  HINT:  Some of our shirts were pretty vibrant.

Natsia's faceplant will forever echo in my mind . . .

Me: "Natsia is pretty and she's BA on the bars.  She won gold in Beijing!"
Wife: "She's ok and she's old now . . ."
Me: "No way, watch her dominate these bars . . ."
/Natsia face plants
Wife: "She sure dominated something, just not the bars . ."

That was funtastic.  We were sitting a few feet from her a few minutes earlier and she was stretching and looking all nervous.  Fidgeting around like.  You've seen it before, cocking the head side to side, bending over quickly, touching her feet to her forehead (over her back, even).  Unlike any other gymnast or even herself.  I tell my wife:  "Man, she looks way off right now, something's not right, she's going to fall on the bars."  She had just scratched herself from the vault.  Man, it was LOUD when she hit.
We couldn't bring in good cameras so I only got shots from a phone, bummer.

I find it odd that the coach is standing right there in case that exact thing happens....... and does almost nothing.
Never argue with an idiot, he'll just drag you down to his level and beat you with experience.

Kind of anti-climactic. I forgot they had pads under. Of course it's loud - those hella thick vinyl pads make noise. But it's all bark.
