Monitor good or bad
« on: July 01, 2012, 10:22:16 pm »
Hello
I have a makvision 27 inch brand new in a multigame machine.  When I play old Atari old games in Atari like adventure and arcade games like pole position I get over a minute a darkened area about the size of an orange on the upper left screen and dimming on he rt side but not so bad.  It goes away if i put another game on with different colors.  Someone told me as it was a new phosphor screen it would do this with old games where a color is on the screen for a while and then get better.....Is this right?

Is this magnetic distortion, screen burn , other....

Where can I get a new fantastic high resolution high dollar arcede screen that does not do this?

Thanks all

Sorry, I missed this post earlier.

I have noticed the same thing and after doing some searching on the forums over time, this issue does seem to pop up from time to time. I have seen it occur in Pole Position and Xybots but also on some non Atari games.  Switching to a different game also seems to make the problem go away.

The best short term solution that seems to work well is to degauss the monitor while in the game that is having issues.  Seems that once I do that, I am good to go for a while.  You can find it cheaper elsewhere but here is link for what worked for me:

http://www.amazon.com/Waldom-Degaussing-Coil-Color-Power/dp/B00011UYJU/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1341907260&sr=8-1&keywords=degausser+coil

Over time, the spot on the upper left has gone away.  Don't know if it is time, degaussing, or both that has resolved that one.  The right side is still somewhat of an issue.

I haven't had time to look into it further but the next step I am going to take is to look at the resolution of those specific games and see what they are running at.  By chance, are you running AVRes or using an ArcadeVGA?  Also, can you post a list of games that you are having this issue?  Looking for some common traits to work with.

As far as monitors go, there really aren't many other options out there from a new perspective....especially in that size.

I can't tell from your description if you have a gaussing problem or if you're getting some form of blooming.  Try turning down the contrast control to correct the latter.  A manual degaussing coil may help you take care of the former.  Make sure nothing magnetic is close to the monitor like speakers.

Doesn't appear to be a blooming issue on mine.   I also double checked that I actually had shielded speakers installed which turned out to be the case.  No metal objects in the vicinity.  I played some last night and early this morning and it does seem to be less and less of a problem over time.  I could see a little bit  of an issue on the right side but it wasn't nearly as bad as it was a few months ago.  I degaussed the screen and the problem is gone again.  Resolution is native.

Just seems odd that only certain games seem to cause this issue.
