Dumpster diving-Your Suggestions
« on: June 27, 2012, 11:49:55 pm »
I am going to scout out my local Gamestop to see what potential their dumpster has. Does anyone else have any other recommendations of where to go dumpster diving?

How about a jail cell because that's where your going if they find you!   :laugh2:

Anyway aren't they locked and why would they throw games out?
And I would just drive the streets the night when you put out stuff for garbage collection. If I can find a working 37 in. HD TV someone threw out you could find some games and anything else.

Gamestop threw out all the used DS cases and manuals, I believe... I wouldn't put much past them.

It's pretty well  known that they do throw out a lot of stuff.  Most of it would be considered console SWAG, though.  Promo materials, cases/manuals, stuff like that.  Anything functional usually gets sent back to Corporate and most really good SWAG gets taken home by an employee.

I've hit up GS 15 or 20 times and only once did I find anything.  It was a decent score though, I found:

2 GS brand 360 controllers
3 Modern Warfare 2 360 controllers
1 Wii wired network adapter
2 GS brand PS2 racing wheels
1 PS3 Move controller (the one without the ball thingy)
1 PS3 BluRay remote
1 360 power supply
probably a couple other things I'm forgetting

All the controllers' cords were cut but that is an easy fix when the cut is close to the controller.
I fixed a few things, sold a few things and threw a couple away that I had no use for and wasn't selling.

I don't go diving often but when I do, I'll continue to check GS since it's on my 'route' and it's one of few places left that doesn't have a compactor.
If there's bees in the trap I'm catching em
By the thorax and abdomen
And sanding the stingers down to a rough quill
Then I dip em in ink, and I scribble a bit
But if it they wriggle then I tickle em until they hold still
Lemme say it again
In my land of pretend
I use bees as a mf'n pen

Here's some light reading about diving laws in Canada and the US.  The same laws that allow cops to pilfer your refuse for evidence are the same that protect divers and their found booty.  Rule of thumb, if you have to jump a fence then it's a no-go.  No fence, no sign, no lock = legal diving.  You can find a few townships with ordinances against it but they are far and few between.  Trash is public domain.

At Hastings we have to destroy anything we throw out.

I think the majority of places have the same policy.  A good amount of stuff is easily fixed in my experience though.  One of my better treasure troves uses orange spray paint that comes off of most surfaces with lighter fluid.

Home Depot is the same way. Here's the thing, the one I worked at didn't have a RAM that went all the way to the back, couple that with a trash pick up cycle that doesn't  allow the dumpster to be full and you have a recipe for some pricey swag. The garbage guys actually started competing for the route that store was on once we threw away a riding mower that couldn't be sold (missing cowling). The ram didn't crush the mower and it was like freaking Christmas in July.

Yeah okay but I never have seen a dumpster with with no lock on it or at least a sign that says "keep out or this dumpster will eat you and you will go out with it's trash". But anyway it was a joke......  8)

Yeah, if by destroy you mean put in your trunk.  Always good to have friend at a store like that.

It would be nice if I could, but I've had to destroy plenty of stuff I'd love to have taken home. It's just against policy, and a DVD or game isn't worth losing my job over.
