Thinking about getting a light gun
« on: May 30, 2012, 04:40:50 pm »
I have an itch.  I wanta light gun.

What does it take?  I am currently using Mala as my front end.  I have a 23" LCD.  There is a piece of plexiglass about 1" in front of the LCD.  My PC is fairly powerful.  I have USB ports to spare so a USB based solution would be best.

What are my options?  What is the cost?  Will it work well?  Well enough that I should have confidence that there will be no frustrations.

How would 2 guns work?

Help appreciated.

Thanks!

I am no veteran light gun user but I recently got the EMS Top Gun III. I quite enjoy it, collected a bunch of gun games that I play quite often. I was able to bypass the range issues with a cell phone camera lens in front of the camera so I can no be much closer to the screen. I did have one issue with the gun I got, one wire got yanked from the camera module and I had to re-solder it ( http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php?topic=120500.0 ). All in all though I really enjoy this thing.

I have an EMS TopGun and I love the features of the gun, but the range I had to stand away from the screen was such an issue that I quit using it.

I never did try the cell phone cam lens mod....how do you do that?

I've been considering the AimTrak as well.

Afterburner I got your PM. I am modifying another EMS 3 with the lens mod and will do a write up ASAP.

Here is where I got the inspiration, http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php?topic=101854.0

This is the LENS I buy, http://www.ebay.com/itm/230800445040?ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1497.l2649

And then it is basically cut part of the end of the gun (optional but helps performance), then removing the wide angle lens from the cheap holder, and mounting it to the barrel of the gun.

You can check ebay for a US seller but it will be $5 for the lens.

I will make a tutorial once I receive my new lens.
