Fat PS3, pre 3.55

Assuming I just got my hands on a fat PS3, with a firmware older than 3.55, what can I do with it?

I'm more interested in MAME & other emulators.  Can a pre 3.55 be modded to do this? 

I have a legit 60Gb fat that gets used mainly as a Blu-Ray player and the occasional game...

Explain to me why a BYOAC mod wants to crack a perfectly good PS3 to do things it was not intended to do in the first place.

A normal BYOAC member maybe but from someone who should be setting a good example?....

Um, it was intended in the first place.  For the longest time, you could run Linux on your PS3 until Sony decided to take it away, after the fact.  You could run MAME on that Linux.

why do you keep saying 'old games'. I always see patched eboot for ALL new games. pretty sure you can play any game on a JB ps3. cant confirm it since I dont have one. sold mine because I wasnt really using it(and I have another one for psn).

mame and finalburn for JB ps3 is pretty good too. last I checked, almost all games ran perfectly with scanlines filter. its very convenient if you just wanna play some classics on big screen tv.

not a whole lot you can do if you don't want to update the firmware. get yourself a dongle or update the firmare. think i still have a box full of minimus avr mods somewhere around here.

So, the firmware is 2.42...  but the blu-ray drive is dead...

That's what I was doing for awhile with my PS3 it just collects dust now after having built an HTPC plus mame using HLSL that's about as close as it gets to using a CRT monitor without having to mess with them.

you don't need a working bluray drive to mod it   As long as the drive controller itself works you can mod it fine.  Slap 3.55 KMEAW or similar on there and then put it in the corner of the room to gather dust just like mine 

To be honest there is nothing a Modded PS3 can do that a RGH/Jtag Xbox can't.  And the emulators for 360 get a lot more love then the PS3 versions.
