Wooden Vewlix Fighter - WIP Round 2
« on: May 17, 2012, 03:22:47 pm »
Greetings to all.

Some of you may remember my first round trying to get a vewlix cab built. Came a long way and ended up having to scrap completely due to storage issues.

Well after about half a year or so...I've decided to try again. So this will be Round 2.

The cab will be a Vewlix style 2-player cab with a swappable control panel. 1 panel will be sanwa japanese style parts, the 2nd will be happ style stuff.

The only real design change I'm making to it from the previous time is that I'm adding a coin door under the control panel next to the access panel. And its going to be all black with some red highlights instead of red & white like the traditional vewlix.

Its gonna be a long project because I'm a lot poorer than I was when I started the first project, and I have some expensive parts to buy....a new tv (the one I planned on using died), and find a Jtagged xbox that runs MAME and will let me play games off the hard drive. So gonna have to scrimp & save to get this baby really going.

I've already gotten some of the project built, as I managed to save a couple pieces from the original project. Just have to sand and re-prime them. So I'll post pictures of that this weekend hopefully.

I'm also working on a couple of arcade fight sticks so I'll post some pics of those when I get that started.

Ooooo, exciting.

I followed your original Fighter cab thread and was hurting with you at the end.

Re. the Jtag xbox, just have to find yourself an xbox with a dash version 14699 or earlier. If its later you can still Reset Glitch Hack it but there are some pretty nasty boot times with RGH2 if you get unlucky with a fussy xbox. Might be an idea to get hold of an xbox sooner rather than later, might save you a lot of hassle later on.

I have one that takes 3 minutes. NO LESS LOL. same falcon chipset usually have instant boot time with RGH1.

I may not even bother with a Jtagged box then if its a lot of trouble. Only benefit is not having to swap discs.

I've got a PC set aside that can run Super Street fighter IV AE and SF X Tekken, so the rest that aren't on PC I can just have the disks for xbox. No biggie.

I've gotta spend this weekend and get my work space setup. I haven't had a chance to yet because of weird weather changes. Sunny for a couple hours then rain the rest of the day. Don't wanna start priming then get caught in an afternoon shower.

Does anyone have any recommendations for a affordable 1080p LCD television thats about 32" that has little or no lag/latency for fighters?

I'm back from a very long hiatus. Apologies for resurrecting an old & dead thread. But the project is being worked on again.

Since my last post (May 2012), I've finally gotten all of the pieces into my game room and out of the elements until it stay sunny for longer than a day. It's been rain on for 2 days, 1 day of sunshine, then 2 more days of rain...They'll be brought back and forth inside & out for when I resand and paint them.

I was originally gonna paint it black & white. Decided to go all black instead.

I've finally got the controls all figured out, and decided on what I want to run in the cab.

It will have a Naomi 2, a PC to run Mame, and a Xbox 360 or PS3 (depending on which one is easier to mod) to run the modern fighters. So it's gonna be a crowded little case. Gonna take some doing to get all that in there with a working coin door. But that's part of the fun.

So if anyone has a Naomi 2 they are looking to get rid of, even if it's a couple of components, let me know.''

I will be posting some photos tonight of how the cab looks right now.

Welcome back Gatsu,  you'll have a ton of lessons learned from your first go at it, so none of that was in vain.  I'm a real fan of the Vewlix design, Ond watching  :).

Go the 360 Route,  You should be able to pick up a Slim with RGH fairly cheaply now.

Welcome back Gatsu, looking forward to seeing some pics.  :applaud:
Definitely go with an Xbox 360 if you can get your hands on one. I just finished a bartop housing a 360 and I couldn't be happier.
Love the fact that I can play SSFIV, SF X Tekken and the old street fighter, mortal kombat games on one machine.

You can check out my build here:

Alright. Here be the current pictures as promised.

These are the 2 side pieces. They need to be sanded, reprimed and painted black.

The main body of the cab. Where all the guts will go. And what the control panel will fit on. Another hole needs to be cut out for a coin door.

Top of the main box, where the control panel cables will feed through. You can see where the paint job got completely screwed up.
So gotta be sanded down and repainted.

Back of the main box. The space is for ventilation. I will be installing a bar of pc fans in there to draw the heat out.

The box with the sides attached, so you get an idea of the space it's gonna take up.

I've been looking over a lot of pieces that I haven't taken photos of yet. The control panel and some of the other pieces. It's gonna take A LOT to get the pieces where I want them to be.

Some pieces are gonna have to be redone completely. Which is okay, because now I can plan better than I did previously. And I have a couple friends who want to help.

Here's a couple of shots of the control panel. I'm basically gonna have to redo this entire thing completely. Everything was all nice and flush, then I guess some moisture got in and warped some of the pieces. Now it's a jumbled, swollen mess. Only things worth saving are the main box and the side pieces. Everything else has gotta be redone.

Here's the control panel attached to the main cab.

Another of the control panel

Closeup of the swollen mess this poor piece has turned into.

Control panel with the top panel off.

Another closeup of the swollen mess. See how nothings flush? It was so pretty once.

Most of the repair is sanding and repainting. That will take a weekend or two. I'm gonna be rebuilding the control panel from scratch so I know everything will fit and be flush again. That will maybe take a weekend or two depending on weather.

I think my next build will be a Kraylix vewlix cab though.  ;)

Good luck and remember, patience is key.  Sanding can be a chore.  Put some good tunes on and zone out, time will fly by.
