Knievel's NHL Bartops..Collect Them All! - Blackhawks Update
« on: April 20, 2012, 06:30:53 pm »
#1 in a series of NHL-themed Bartops.
This one pays tribute to the team I grew up with, the 70's-80's era Winnipeg Jets.

Big thanks to Scott at Gameongraphix for an awesome-as-always print job.
Pics can't do this thing justice. The artwork looks just stunning in person..

Very nice.  19" Display?

I've got a buddy that would love Whalers theme.  I'll forward this to him.

Knievels now in the bartop game?   I like the design.   It looks like a mini evolution.   Did you use 3/4" or 1/2" stock for the build?   My Evolution knock off was originally going to be a Boston Bruins themed cabinet.   Great work and the art is impressive.

Thanks guys.  :)

It's a 20" Dell LCD. Same type I always use in my full sized cabinets.

3/4" Superlite MDF on these, trying to keep the weight down.

Go Whalers!

Starting to get an itch to build one now that the Predators knocked off the Red Wings. Would look great with the Preds colors and artwork.
I need a house to put stuff in, instead of an apartment with stacks of boxes.

Congrats, heck of a goalie you've got there. Preds bartop would be cool for sure.

Thanks Le Chuck, your Darkade is what got me going on these.
I have a new found respect for all the bartop builders out there. These little guys are a lot of work.

I'm starting my first build tomorrow. I was going to use a modified taxi cab design, but dear god, this thing is beautiful. I drew up some designs for it. I have it 23" tall, 16" deep, and 16" wide.

Whaler's makes me happy...being a kid from Hartford.

My neighbor keeps hinting at a bartop when he's loitering around my garage looking at my full-size.  I said I'd build him one (for some $cratch, of course!).  I like this design...might have to "borrow it" much like my CP!

I still like the idea of a Rush-inspired cab for all you Canukians.  They're the best Canadian export since my great-grandmother.   :afro:

Thanks guys.

Afraid I'm away on vacation at the moment so I can't make measurements.
The CP is 20" wide if that helps any.

BTW I used a single strip of white LED tape for the marquee light and I couldn't be happier with it.
Never had a more evenly lit marquee. Only cost a few bucks, no heat, and should last a very long time.
I'll be using it on all my machines from now on.

And if anyone is wondering, those are Zippyy joysticks. Long-shaft style so I could bottom-mount with no routing.
I completely removed the restrictor plate and they now play great on both 4 and 8-way games!

Makes me dream of having a Minnesota North Stars cab and playing Blades of Steel on it. That would be a perfect time machine back into the 80's for me.

Blades....of....Steel is getting a good workout on this one, as are Hat Trick and Hit The Ice.  :D

How many? at the moment I have 2 more of these in the works. Just waiting on the parts to finish them off.
I have a bunch of artwork mocked up though so there will be more coming after that....

Nothing says old-time hockey like Phoenix vs. Nashville, right?

For the record, I'm a Phoenix native but I grew up liking hockey. I used to go to our local IHL games all the time. My first NHL memory was of the Edmonton-Boston "Lights Out" game back in '88.

Ha Ha!  I can't believe some of the cities that have NHL teams now.  In the long run it should be good for USA hockey though.  Must be tough to even find a rink in Nashville or Phoenix.  Here in metro Boston there are one or two in every town.

Actually, we have two really nice rinks on the opposite sides of the Valley, with two older ones servicing the middle. The Youth Hockey programs in the city actually do quite well.

Make that three!

My best friend's kid plays youth hockey. It's a lot of fun. I used to teach rolley hockey classes for the City of Phoenix when I was in college, well before the NHL moved here. All the transplants here help (now, if they'd just stop rooting for their other teams...).

We are lucky we still have the team in Nashville. Few years ago it went up for sale, a Canada businessman was going to buy it and move them north. Luckily some local investors bought them and changed the marketing. They have been successful since then. Hard to do when you have an NFL team right up the street.

Knievel,
I am looking to start a project into the bartop machine and was looking for ideas but yours has just blown me away.
The detail is unreal and finish is superb. Great job.
Was it easy to use the continuous Imould around the curves?
Thanks

The Rangers have always been my favorite team.  I started liking them as a kid because I thought their red-white-blue color scheme looked really good on them (and of course it was America's colors).  Their goalie masks always look very patriotic, too, with the Statue of Liberty on them.  Really got into it during their '94 Cup win.

Even though they're the "best" team this go around (since Vancouver's already out), I'm not too impressed with their showing so far.  I'd like to see a breakdown of the offensive zone time of each team during the series with the Senators.  Seems like the Rangers were always on defense.
I'll exercise patience when you stop exercising stupidity.

The one up top? It's a 120mm PC fan.
There is also a smaller fan that blasts the processor heatsink, that was part of the Dell.

PC fans I have seen are like an inch thick and meant for internal mounting,  This one seems to be outside surface mounted... yet inset somehow.  I never saw one like that.

Looks like the fan's mounted inside with a plastic cover mounted outside (albeit with an awesome Jets sticker in the middle).

And the year before global cooling was real. I think I got a decades worth of snow in the 2010-2011 winter.  :laugh2:

Yeah buddy, grew up in St. Vital! Living in Denver now but go back every month. Just finished building a Transformers bartop in Winnipeg, on Chuch Avenue in a huge shop that I have access to. If you ever need tools, or want to build another, I'd love to do a Jets one!

Cheers!

I've used Tempered glass on every cabinet.

Where do you get tempered glass in Winnipeg? Most places I looked, it was very expensive. Have been trying to track down Greylite 14 in the city. Thanks!

Thanks. When I need to get glass locally I normally use Pioneer Window and Door.
Tempered glass comes from outside the province so you'll be waiting a couple of weeks no matter where you buy from.

Thanks Le Chuckster.

Guys I can make some measurements off this one for you but I doubt it would be enough to work from.
I don't have any plans, never do. I make my side template then build as I go.

These things are a lot of work. If you are starting out and thinking this would be an easy first build, it's not.
Honestly I think I can build a full cabinet in the same or possibly less time.

This.  The smaller they get the longer they take.  I can toss together a good full size twice to three times as fast as it takes to execute a mini of similar build quality.

That's initially surprising, but upon thinking about it I can see how the challenges of 'miniturizing' and fitting it all, combined with cooling, can cause new challenges.

Quick question:

If the fan is pulling air *out* of the cab, are there vents on the bottom/front that allow this air to flow through?

Yes there is a 1/2" space between the bottom panel and the cabinet sides.

You can see my volume control buttons in this pic as well.

great bartops!

I'm a bit of a fair-weather hockey fan myself. Was lucky enough to attend some of the first florida panthers games, was in the inaugural panthers clinic, met the first panthers roster and was also lucky enough to meet the general manager of the quebec nordiques back then. Good times.

These are extremely well done!!  I may have to make a St. Louis Cardinals one like it for my dad to go in his man cave :)

I don't often watch hockey, but when I do, I watch the Blues.   >:D

Grew up with the whale.  Saw Gordy and Mark play on the same team, too.  It was awesome.  The Howe's lived in Glastonbury.  Not sure if they're there still.

I'm a big Red Wings fan, with the Canucks as my #2 team...

...now, if you had some sweet graphics for those... :applaud:

These are fantastic - I'm a big Caps fan and would love to do something similar.

Thanks. I need to do some more of these. Really cool, just so time consuming.
These have all gone to friends so I get a chance to play them whenever I watch games over there. ;D
