When I was young I read a book called The plant that ate dirty socks. It was a fun read. Same with Indian in the Cupboard. I think those are timeless.

Oh yeah . . . of course Indian in the Cupboard. How did I forget about that one?

We've now finished almost the entire collection of Roald Dahl's books. I'm on The Great Glass Elevator now, then Fantastic Mr. Fox, then I'll be in the market for new books to read to her.

Oops my bad.

I'll venture the borrowers, by Mary Norton.....

Try this one:  Bottersnikes and Gumbles by S.A. Wakefield.

No clue!  ;D Yeah thats a fun one, and there isnt any violence in it at all, that I can remember anyway. Man, I wish I still had all those books, I would love to read em again. I could probably read em all in a hour or two.  :lol
Pictures are overrated anyway.

I just remember when I read that one as a kid, I kept thinking of how I would exploit the ass off of that cupboard. Learn how to make awesome ---steaming pile of meadow muffin--- out of plastic and make it real....Like gold bars and laser guns.

Bumping to suggest the Great Brain books.  Perhaps a little older than she's ready for but if you're reading them with her, you'll enjoy them as much as she will.

Based in Utah in the late 19th century.  Hilarious novels.

Good call.  I loved those when I was a kid and had forgotten about them.

Just reserved the first one at the library.  My 10 year-old thinks he is done reading for the summer.  We shall see.

"Super Hero Squad: Captain America to the Rescue!" is also a good one.   >:D

Interesting. I'm from Utah, and was raised Mormon. Do you think that'll affect my opinion of them at all?

In other news, I just gave up on Harriet the Spy after getting about 60 pages in. What a piece of garbage that was. Here's my review on Amazon:

Quote
The perfect book for the child interested in an uninteresting girl making uninteresting observations about uninteresting people going about their uninteresting everyday business.

We're reading the second book in the Mouse and the Motorcycle series right now.

I knew that about you being from Utah and thought it'd be a good read regardless of your personal history.  I dont remember all the details but the religious aspects of the book are parts of the story lines but not imposing in any way.  Frankly, I'd be more concerned about the books having mostly male protagonists.

Seconding the Great Brain books.  I loved these as a kid, I don't remember anything Religious/Mormon about them, it follows a band of kids getting into adventures and such back in the "old days".  One of the stories focused around the family being the first in town to get a flushable toilet, so that gives you the time frame.

Main character is actually the brother of the "Brain" character.  I don't remember if girls have a prominent role, so you will want to check that out.

Enjoy!

I'm not really concerned with whether girls play a prominent role in any particular books. We've read almost the entire Roald Dahl collection, many of which feature female protagonists, plus Charlotte's Web and others that don't spring to mind at the moment. I don't think she's lacking in girl power.

I'll also throw out the Alvin Fernald series.  Another genius who gets into adventures.

And when she gets a little older (to 8 or so, maybe?), the Trixie Belden series.  Set in the 50s.  I thought they were better than the Nancy Drew novels.  I bought a couple for my oldest daughter for Christmas.

WOW, I loved the brain books...funny though now that you mention the era I never really noticed when I was reading the books...but I remember things like them getting the sears cataloge so I guess it was set back-in-the-day.

Speaking of geniuses, we've read a couple Artemis Fowl books and they've been pretty good. Those ones have an interesting twist in that the main character isn't just a genius kid. He's a genius criminal mastermind kid.

Stuart Little was a favourite of my niece when she was younger, and before that my nephews. I also have fond memories of the Borrowers.

Borrowers is a great idea. She adores the movie. She actually leaves food out for them that I have to dump so that she'll think they got it.

Has she read/or been read Wind in the willows?, if not that should be quite a good one and will take a while to get through.  Also I recommend you find "The 13 1/2 lives of Captain Bluebear"  I thoroughly enjoyed that book as a 30+ Without kids to read it to.

After that its onto the classics,  Jungle Book, Treasure Island, Gullivers travels, The Hobbit etc.
