Here's maybe a fresh topic of conversation.....and maybe it's been dealt with in the comics and I'm just unaware.....but it did seem like the alien army was rather weak.....for being such an advanced race of beings. Was that Chinturi army...or however it's spelled....in the comics?
The Chitauri are basically Skrulls, except from the Ultimate Marvel universe. When the trailer first appeared everyone figured it would be the Kree or Skrulls. The Chitauri are typically a subversive culture, they fight but often times go for more subversive tactics. In the Ultimate avengers they do wind up fighting and do kick a lot of butt. The Hulk is the main one who stops the Chitauri in Ultimate Avengers.
I wouldn't say they are weak, but I would "expect" the Avengers to defeat them. Working in tandem the Avengers are more powerful then the Chitauri army.
Each avenger, even those not super powered, are stronger/faster than the average man/woman. Could the military have come in and killed lots of Chitauri? Sure. Would they have defeated the Chitauri? No.
Side note, the Asgardians are still "Gods" in the Movie. Thor gives an explanation that humans can understand about science but they are still gods. The thing to remember is that Gods in the marvel universe are just powerful beings. You can't think of the Christian god and Marvels gods in the same sentence. None of Marvels gods created the universe so there's a huge gap in power on that level. The only things in the Marvel universe that can come close to a god like Christianities would be either the Cosmic Entities or someone with the Infinity Gauntlet. In DC there
IS an actual God like figure that represents closely what Christians follow. His avatar, the specter, is ridiculously powerful.
