I enjoyed it. There was a definite Transformers feel to it at times though.

Do you mean as in "big summer action movie" feel or "horrible crap movie" feel?
Completed projects: Pac bartop (Plug & Play), 30th Anniversary Pac cab (MAME), Point Blank (PS1), Centipede (arcade hardware- light restore), VS. Big Summer Action Movie feel. I did not feel that the movie was crap. And it was much better than all 3 Transformers which isn't saying much I guess.

I keep seeing this Transformers comparison. After how retarded the first Transformers movie was, I ignored the second two. Will having not seen Transformers 3 increase my enjoyment of Avengers?

:dizzy: I agree....where is this comparison coming from? I dont see it...  I was able to see the characters clearly and action sequences were top notch... Iron Man was "Iron Man" (no jumbled piece of scrap metal talking) Explosions were well placed and used correctly... and as far as i know I didnt hear/see Shia LaDoofy screaming "Optimus!" through out the damn movie...

Kudos to Josh Weldon .... for blowing Micheal "BAM"a-Bay out of the water.

I don't get the "Transformers Feel" reference either.  How does a movie containing "explosions" get an automatic comparison to a crudtastic Michael Bay movie?

Also, robot chicken Michael Bay Explosions:

hmm....my posts keep getting deleted. Anyway...I didn't feel that it was like Transformers. I just felt that the cgi reminded me of it AT TIMES. 95% of the movie was great. Let's just say I am not a fan of cgi...but obviously you cannot make a movie like this without it.

I gotcha. I'm with you on the CGI, I haven't seen the film yet but (based on the trailer) I am going in assuming that The Hulk's effects will test my suspension of disbelief a few times.

Hopefully this post doesnt get deleted. I think if a mod deletes your post, you should get notified as to why. Anyway...

I think what Bootay means is that there was a big action scene in the end that involved a lot of destruction in New York, ala Transformers 3. Granted, I havent seen Transformers 3, but it shows both scenes in the trailers. There is a big worm robot thing in Transformers 3 at the end, and Avengers have a few big flying worm things tearing up the city.

Im not a bif fan of CGI either, but sometimes, when there is no way to do it practically, you HAVE to. The Hulk was amazing, I loved this movie, I want to see it again. Also, dont see it in 3D. Its a waste of money, and it doesnt look as sharp as 2D.
Pictures are overrated anyway.

I wouldn't classify the Avengers enemy ships as a big worm thing, especially since there are a lot of them.

For me, even though both are CGI, they have different feels to them.  Guess it's a personal preference thing.

Alright...I said AT TIMES. I was referring to the enemies and the worm things let's not hang onto my comments. The movie was fine...it just had a couple of moments that felt similar to a Transformers movie...nothing quite as bad as Battleship or anything. LOL

I'm out of town all week in a training class, I haven't deleted anything, and I don't see any deleted posts of yours in the trash can. Neither for Bootay either. Nor do I see any deleted posts in the log files.

What / when were you guys posting that looks like it was deleted? You sure it got posted?

Every time I see a commercial for Battleship I laugh out loud... a movie based on the Battleship board game starring Liam Neeson and Rhianna sounds like a Robot Chicken sketch.  :laugh2: I look forward to next summer's Connect Four featuring Morgan Freeman and Ke$ha.

In a world overrun by zombies, can these four unlikely heroes fall in line to save humanity? June 2013!

How much more far-fetched is it than Pirates of the Caribbean? A movie based on a crappy theme park ride . . .

I remember leading up to the release of that film wondering how in the name of god they got Johnny Depp to sign on for that role. The movie turned out pretty damned good, though, all things considered.

True. Pirates was dripping with atmosphere, the whole fantasy pirate thing really had its own vibe. Actually made me excited back when Gore Verbinski was supposed to direct a BioShock movie.

Jazzed?? Its past that, man!! :drool :woot

I have not seen it yet but know people who have and all have said its great, the best ever!!

And having smashed records for the boxoffice in the first few weeks (never has it happened in movie history) and over $800 million worldwide and climbing (also its not even out in Japan yet) it will easily beat avatar!
And I feel sorry for Battleship and dark shadows, bad timing for release!

Avengers for the win!!

Okay, do I get paid by the studio for this advertising now?  ;)

EDIT: Passed 1 Billion today, wow!!  ;D

I saw The Avengers yesterday with the family.  It started off very slow and I was a little worried.  Even the first scene with Tony Start felt a little flat.  The movie started to pick up steam very quickly after that and kept getting better and better until the very end.  Just a fantastic movie.  Everything you want in a summer movie.

I didn't care for either Hulk movie and don't really like Mark Ruffalo but you people that posted that the Hulk made the movie were dead on correct.  Ruffalo does a great job and Whedon really understood how to use the Hulk effectively.  He must just be a better supporting character.

There is a "monologuing" scene towards the end that is laugh out loud funny.

Just finished rewatching Hulk on DVD and seeing the Avengers tomorrow, finally. I have to say, the build-up and interweaving between movies is really something we haven't seen before, and it is interesting to see one of the fundamental aspects of the Marvel Universe (oh, how cross-overs kept me broke as a kid) work in a different medium.

As long as (film) Captain America never meets the (film) Human Torch, we'll be alright.

Different studios, plus they are planning to reboot anyway (and if they don't by the end of the year, the rights revert to Marvel Studios).

Yeah, I think it is better if the FF films fade into obscurity anyway. I still find it funny he has played two Marvel heroes, though.

Does Avengers explain how Captain America isn't 80 years old, or do they just gloss over it like The Watchmen did with The Comedian?

It was explained in the Cap movie, in the last 10 minutes... he was frozen, Walt Disney's head-style in the arctic after the plane crash (that he made very little effort to escape). Unless I am missing something.

Thor always seemed out of place to me in the Marvel Universe. I am impressed that they stuck with him, though, as they could have used the different medium as an excuse to use someone else, they have plenty of popular characters to choose from.

Bah,
Post submitted above before I actually wrote anything.  Actual post below:

Okay, fair enough.  Does it explain why a thunder god needs a bunch of human helpers?  Is it just a Matrix 2 thing where he's bored and likes to fight for no reason?
Not sure if you asking based on seeing the movie, or not seeing the movie.  But in a nutshell, Thor’s brother is involved, so there is a good and a bad God that would effectively cancel  each other out.  The bad guys coming in would eventually overwhelm Thor (I imagine) and even if not, the issue is that they are causing a heck of a lot of destruction, and while he can slow the tide, he is unable to stop it, which will cause a lot of damage to the Earth, which thanks to a sexy Natalie Portman, is under Thor’s protection for the most part, and he also feels guilty about the damage he caused previously.  Not your usual God caring stuff, but Thor seems to have a soft spot for humans/Earth.

For myself,
Saw it is weekend in 3-D at a Dine-in theater with the wife, reserved comfortable seating, food & beer, can't beat it.  We loved it, though she equated it to porn as she got to watch Cap and Thor together, not sure how to take that.  Great movie, weak in some spots (I didn't see Transformers 3 so have no comments there, but the army itself was kinda wimpy, but worked ), but the characters came off great (I expected to be cold towards Black Widow but she had a couple really great moments where she did her espionage thing that I liked ), each character had a "moment" or two, but the Hulk did steal the show , I thought Ruffalo was good throughout, though I haven't yet seen Norton's Hulk so can’t comment there.  This was probably the best of the Marvel films leading up to it in my opinion, there were several spots where I laughed out loud (LOUD per my wife) and probably the most impressive thing is that they actually did it.  In concept, this is a great idea, it execution, this could have gone so badly with all the lead-in movies and required cast, but they pulled it off.  Kudos to Joss and the actors.  There is a scene towards the end where all the Avengers are in picture and ready for battle and I thought “Wow, they did it, they actually made this happen!”

FYI to those who like to sit for the credits, TWO extra scenes.  First mentioned above, there is a second, funny , addition.

I’d see it again, will own on DVD.  Woot!

I'm excited. Joss' comics runs have me convinced he can handle ensembles of iconic characters, which hopefully will translate to the big screen well.

Ah, past self, you were right!  A very good flick. Consider me impressed and looking forward to where the series goes next, hopefully with Whedon at the helm again.

And nobody was kicking the back of my seat while I watched, which while it has nothing to do with Joss, only makes me appreciate him more.

Well . . .  :censored: . . . maybe you should go see it.
Well last night I went to see The Avengers in IMAX 3D. (got the tickets online and I could pick the seats so no trouble getting in!)

Anyway after 2 hours and 30 minutes of watching it, and getting out of the theater at 1 A.M.  :P , I would say its most definitely worth going to!

Its funny (some moments the entire audience was laughing like you would expect at a comedy), has a good plot, the characters all work great together, and the action was not overdone. But still I would say its a great action movie, but wasn't constantly happening. Only a lot near the end and a bit spread throughout. So not overdone like some movies are. And not at all like the Transformers are!!
Why do people think they are similar?  :dunno

So I would recommend this movie to anyone, IMAX or not. And make sure you stay right to the very, very end of the credits. The clips are worth seeing!

I haven't seen either, but it's pretty clear that people aren't comparing it to Transformers generally. They're specifically comparing it to Transformers 3. As in, there are striking plot similarities or something.

Since I have taken the DVD of the first one back to the store after reading about it I really don't watch them anymore.
But Transformers 3 did very well, and The Avengers did better but not by much....yet!!!! So was Transformers 3 better than the other 2?

Critically, Transformers 3 did worse than the first film and better than the second. But at 35% on the Tomatometer it is very rotten no matter how you dice it. The Avengers, by comparison, has a 93% rating.

Saw Avengers last night. I thought it was great. A lot of hilarious moments. I agree with the common theme here that Hulk stole the show. Another great thing about the movie is that the filmmakers clearly understand how absurd Captain America is and they used that to their advantage.

I'm going tomorrow.  Carmike is showing 2D with Open Captions (wife is hearing impaired) so I'm super stoked to get to see this in the theatre.

Last film I saw in a theatre with my wife was Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon.

A lot of theaters suck with captioning options, I am glad you found something.  You ever try any of those seat mounted closed captioning devices (if they even offer that in your area). They sounded kind like a pain to me that you have to keep looking down at your seat to watch the movie.

Those rear projection mirror systems are terrible.  It's a half assed solution at best.  A lot of people complain to management when they pay to see a film and find out that english subs are being displayed for the HI in the audience.  One dude in Birmingham a few weeks ago asked for his money back and they mngment declined so he pulled the fire alarm.  We have a pretty good deaf community here tho so it hasn't been as much of an issue.  We'll be going out in force tomorrow.

I assume a film like Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon, which I saw in a theater in a rural town (population 25,000), has its subtitles hard coded on the print. It's not like there's a big mandarin community to speak of in the U.S. Any multiplex showing this film is showing it to an English-speaking audience. There's no need for special captioning.

Correct, those were hard coded subs; however, hard coded subs are becoming less common for theatres due to digital releases. Nowadays even foreign language sections are part of a soft sub track that is turned on as default. Warner, Sony, and a few others always send the full English sub track with every release. All by law can provide by request but that may result in a multiweek turnaround. It is at the theatre owner's discretion to present the captions as all digital projectors are sub compliant.

Since they usually show the 2D version on the same screen as the 3D version, couldn't they use the RealD glasses to display subs that are practically invisible to the rest of the audience?

Nevermind. Wouldn't work.

Don't they have devices for the HI, like Braille encoders and special displays?
